A fuse cutout for connection to a power source includes a mounting having upper and lower support members extending from opposing ends of the mounting. The upper support member includes a first contact having opposing first and second end portions, with the first end portion being attached to the upper support member, and a dome portion disposed between the first and second end portions. The dome portion includes opposing first and second dome surfaces and a first ridge extending along the second dome surface. A holder member is fixedly attached to the lower support member of the mounting. A pivot member is received in the holder member at a first pivot point, the pivot member being movable between first and second positions. A fuseholder is movable between closed and open positions and has upper and lower ends. The lower end is pivotally coupled to the pivot member at a second pivot point. The upper end has an engagement surface for engaging the first ridge of the dome portion of the first contact of the mounting forming an electrical connection therewith.

A fuse cutout for connection to a power source comprising, a mounting having upper and lower support members extending from opposing ends of the mounting, respectively. A holder member fixedly attached to the lower support of the mounting. A pivot member received in the holder member at a first pivot point, the pivot member being movable between first and second positions. A fuseholder having upper and lower ends, the lower end being pivotally attached to the pivot member at a second pivot point, the fuseholder being movable between closed and open positions corresponding to the first and second positions of the pivot member, respectively. A first biasing member disposed between the pivot member and the lower end of the fuseholder at the second pivot point, biasing the pivot member toward the second position. The pivot member includes a planar cam surface that engages a lower contact of the holder member.

A sectionalizer assembly includes a mounting structure having upper and lower electrical contacts, a sectionalizer tube, an actuating member mounted to the tube and movable from a non-actuated to an actuated position, and a pivotal latching mechanism having a pivot member, latch arm and catch. The pivot member is mounted to the lower electrical contact and to a lower end of the tube for undergoing pivotal movement relative thereto between locking and releasing positions. The latch arm fixedly attached to the pivot member extends outwardly therefrom and undergoes pivotal movement therewith between the locking and releasing positions. The catch is carried on a lower end of the actuating member and undergoes movement therewith. The latch arm has an outer end fittable within a recess in the catch that is open at least at one side thereof. The latch arm outer end interengages the catch within the recess thereof when the actuating member is at the non-actuated position and the pivot member is at the locking position. Such interengagement tends to maintain the pivot member in the locking position. The latch arm outer end disengages the catch recess as the actuating member is moved from the non-actuated position to the actuated position and the pivot member is moved from the locking position to the releasing position. The movement of the catch with the actuating member from the non-actuated position to the actuated position causes the latch arm to pivotally move away from and disengage the catch, permitting an upper end of the tube to move from a closed to open position relative to the upper electrical contact.

A resettable internal actuating mechanism, used in an electronic sectionalizer having a tube assembly movable between a closed position and an open position, includes a latching element of an electro-mechanical component mounted in the tube assembly and biased to move to an extended position and movable to a retracted position in response to receipt of an electrical signal, an actuating member spaced from the latching element and mounted in the tube assembly and being biased to move from a non-actuated position to an actuated position, and a linking lever mounted in the tube assembly between the latching element and the actuating member and biased to pivotably move from a latched position to an unlatched position. The linking lever has opposite ends latched respectively to the latching element and actuating member when the linking lever is at the latched position and the latching element is at the extended position to thereby hold the actuating member at the non-actuated position. The opposite ends of the linking lever unlatches respectively from the latching element and from the actuating member in response to the latching element being moved to the retracted position to thereby release the linking lever to move to the unlatched position and the actuating member to move to the actuated position.

An electronic sectionalizer for a branch line of a high voltage power distribution system has a resettable actuator for unlatching a trunnion member and release of a sectionalizer tube toward a disabled or drop-out orientation. The actuator includes an elongated, spring-loaded plunger normally held by a latch in loaded position, and a solenoid or the like is provided to shift the latch and enable movement of the plunger toward a released position for simultaneous swinging movement of the trunnion member. In certain forms of the invention, the plunger is directly engageable with a wall of the trunnion member, while in other embodiments of the invention mechanical advantage is provided by use of an elongated lever which is disposed in the path of the plunger and which bears against the trunnion member for initiating rotational movement of the latter.

A pivot mechanism for drop-out of an electronic sectionalizer tube from an upper contact of mounting structure is arranged so that substantially the entire force released by an actuator fired by a sectionalizer logic circuit immediately causes the tube to drop away and disengage the upper contact. The actuator is mounted on a lower portion of the tube and has a pin that strikes a trunnion pivotally interconnecting a lower contact of the mounting structure and a lower portion of the tube, and the pin of the actuator strikes the trunnion at a location between the pivotal connections of the trunnion so that immediate, downwardly directed motion of the sectionalizer tube away from the upper contact is assured. The pivot mechanism reliably ensures successful drop-out of the tube regardless of adverse environmental conditions and with minimal reliance upon a spring or the effects of gravity.

Latch and pivot mechanism for electronic sectionalizer mounting structure

An end cap connection assembly for use in connecting the metallic end caps of an electrical device such as current limiting fuses or lightning arrestors to associated insulative housings is provided which gives a strong mechanical bond as well as a leak-proof seal between these components. The connection assembly includes a cap presenting a continuous, annular, generally U-shaped in cross section housing-receiving groove, along with a relatively rigid synthetic resin sealing adhesive contacting both the groove walls and housing. The rigid adhesive is selected to have a heat distortion temperature closely matching that of the housing. Preferably, sealing material also has a thermal coefficient of expansion profile analogous to that of the housing. In this way the overall sealing assembly can successfully resist leakage resulting from thermal cycling. The sealing assembly of the invention completely eliminates the use of conventional O-rings, gaskets or similar expedients.

Electrical device end cap connection assembly using rigid sealing

An end cap connection provides a strong mechanical bond as well as a fluid resistant seal between an electrically insulative tubular member and a conductive end piece or cap. The cap is provided with a generally U-shaped channel, and a quantity of synthetic resin adhesive disposed in the channel contacts an end portion of the tubular member as well as walls of the end cap. In one embodiment of the invention, the tubular member has a generally 90.degree. edge for engagement with outer end cap walls defining the channel, such that as the tubular member is shifted toward the bottom of the channel, curved bottom walls defining the latter maintain the tube at a position spaced from the channel bottom to enable the sealing material to fully contact the inserted end of the tubular member. In another embodiment of the invention, the outer channel defining walls of the end cap are magneformed inwardly to compress the adhesive against the tubular member and thus prestress the adhesive so that, during use, thermal expansion and contraction of the connection does not disrupt the bond between the adhesive and the tubular member. Additionally, a castable synthetic resin adhesive having improved bondability and strength after curing is utilized in order to maintain an effective seal regardless of thermal cycling and without the use of O-rings, gaskets or the like.

Method of making an end cap connection for a fluid-resistance electrical

A current limiting fuse has an electrical subassembly which includes fusible elements that are helically wound about a plurality of support plates which, in turn, are secured on each end to a terminal bracket. A leg member electrically and mechanically interconnects the terminal bracket to an end cap assembly fixed to a fuse housing and is flexible for allowing variation in distance between the end cap assembly and the internal subassembly such as would occur when the fuse is exposed to thermal excursions. The flexible leg has a portion which extends in generally transverse relation to the longitudinal axis of the subassembly, and the leg portion is swingable in an arc as the associated end cap assembly shifts relative to the position of the terminal bracket. A series of apertures on each terminal bracket receives end segments of the fusible element supporting plates, and the bracket includes pointed projections which are bendable toward a position of clamping engagement with the end segment of each plate to substantially preclude subsequent disengagement of the plate from the bracket. The electrical subassembly is rigid in nature by means of a unique arrangement of interlocking components even though the support plates are elongated in nature and comprised of a flexible material including mica particles.

Terminal bracket structure for a current limiting fuse

An end cap assembly for a fluid resistant electrical device includes a solderable insulating tube end cap and an insert having a solderable cylindrical body portion positioned within a tubular opening of the end cap. The body portion of the insert has a circumscribing groove containing a quantity of solder. During assembly, the walls of the end cap defining the tubular opening are magneformed inwardly to tightly engage the body portion and thus provide limited frictional resistance to movement of the insert relative to the end cap. Next, the end cap and insert are heated until the solder melts. The end cap assembly provides a strong, torque resistant connection between the insert and the end cap while also maintaining a highly effective seal to preclude fluid leakage when the device is immersed.
