An improved handheld electronic device and an associated method are provided in which enhanced information regarding an 'availability' of a user of a handheld electronic device is provided to another electronic device in a messaging environment. A network selection method for a mobile station which is associated with a Home Public Land Mobile Network (HPLMN) identified by a home Mobile Network Code (MNC) and Mobile Country Code (MCC) pair. The mobile station identifies a plurality of PLMNs in a geographic area, and selects a non-home PLMN identified by a non-home MNC/MCC pair and designated as a Registered PLMN (RPLMN). In response to regaining signal coverage from an out-of-coverage condition with the RPLMN, or being powered-on from a power-off s, tate entered while operating with the RPLMN, the mobile station selects the HPLMN if the HPLMN identified by the home MNC/MCC pair is available. Otherwise, if the HPLMN is unavailable and the RPLMN identified by the non-home MNC/MCC pair is available, the mobile station selects the RPLMN. However, if the RPLMN is unavailable, the mobile station selects an alternate PLMN in accordance with an automatic or manual network selection method.

A handheld electronic device adapted to display a listing of known networks, scan for available networks, display a listing of the available networks and enable the entry of information relating to manually entered networks. In addition, the device is adapted to (1) enable the addition of preferred networks to a preferred network list wherein the preferred networks are one or more of: (i) certain of the known networks selected from the listing of known networks, (ii) certain of the available networks selected from the listing of available networks, and (iii) the manually entered networks; (2) enable the assignment of a priority value to each of the preferred networks; and (3) utilize the preferred networks for performing wireless communications when the device is in a roaming situation, wherein the preferred networks are utilized in a priority order that is based on the priority value assigned to each of the preferred networks.

Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating routing of data in a packet radio communication system. A clone list is downloaded to the mobile node and stored at a clone list depository thereat. The clone list includes a plurality of entries, each of which provides routing information needed to route data when the mobile node is positioned within coverage areas encompassed by differing networks. A determination is made whether the clone list includes appropriate routing information to route a data packet sent by the mobile node positioned in a particular area encompassed by a particular network portion. If the clone list includes an entry containing such information, the need separately to request such information is obviated.

The disclosure describes a system and method for controlling a light for a component of an electronic device. An embodiment uses brightness evaluation zones and progresses through one or more of the zones to determine whether and when to activate the light for given conditions of ambient light. In doing so, the embodiment sets a current brightness evaluation zone for the device and sets an activation status of the light level to an activation value associated with the current brightness evaluation zone. The embodiment compares an ambient light level for the device to the current brightness evaluation zone. Evaluation loops are provided to test and change the current brightness evaluation zone against the detected ambient light. The light may be a backlight.

System and method for illuminating a component of an electronic device

A mobile device sends to a wireless network a request for establishing a service. In response to a rejection of the request, the device reattempts the request so long as the total number of requests is less than a predetermined value. When the total number of rejected requests is greater than or equal to the predetermined value, the device selects a different wireless network with which to establish the communication service if the wireless network is a non-home network. Otherwise, if the wireless network is the home network, the mobile device runs a timer which is initialized with an internal timer value instead of a network timer value when the internal timer value is less than the network timer value. In response to an expiration of the timer, the mobile device sends to the wireless network another one or more requests for establishing the service.
