An image generation system for providing a ghost image free head-up display, the system comprising a display screen having a front surface and a back surface, a picture generation unit for projecting an image towards the display screen for reflection towards a predetermined eye box, and a field lens, wherein the picture generation unit is configured to project light through the field lens such that light is incident on the front surface of the display screen forming a first virtual image, wherein a portion of the light is transmitted through the display screen and is incident on the back surface of the display screen forming a second virtual image, wherein the first and second virtual images have an offset, wherein the field lens is configured such that the offset is below a threshold magnitude and the first and second virtual images are substantially overlaid as viewed from the eye box.

An input device for a multiple wavelength band optical switch comprising: an optical demultiplexer configured to receive light and disperse the received light along a dispersion axis; and a light director configured to direct light in a first wavelength band to the optical demultiplexer at a first angle of incidence and to direct light in a second wavelength band to the optical demultiplexer at a second angle of incidence, the second angle of incidence being different from the first: wherein the difference between the first and second angles of incidence causes the demultiplexer to output dispersed spectra of light corresponding to the first and second bands such that the dispersed spectrum corresponding to the first band is overlapped along the dispersion axis and separated along a switch axis relative to the dispersed spectrum corresponding to the second wavelength band, the switch axis being perpendicular to the dispersion axis.

Multiple wavelength band optical switching unit

The disclosure provides a display device for head mounting, in particular a Maxwellian display device, with an enlarged eye-box. The display device includes a light source emitting light beams for forming an image, an optical system for guiding the light beams to a beam forming element. The beam forming element is configured to converge each of multiple sets of the light beams into a different point of convergence, for example on an exit pupil of the display device. Each point of convergence is a convergent viewing point for a user. The eye-box is thus enlarged.

Display device for head-mounting and display method

An imaging system includes an image realisation device, and projection optics for rendering a display image on a display screen. The image realisation device includes an image realisation surface and a light structuring device having a surface with a first and second region. The light structuring device simulates a first lens on the first region of the surface. A first source image formed on a first region of the image realisation surface and projected through the projection optics renders a first display image on the display screen at a first apparent depth. The light structuring device simulates a second lens on the second region of the surface. A second source image formed on a second region of the image realisation surface and projected through the projection optics renders a second display image on the display screen at a second apparent depth. The first and second lens are independently configurable.

Multi-depth display system

A system includes an image realisation device for forming a source image and projection optics for rendering a display image on a display screen, wherein the display image is a virtual image corresponding to the source image. The projection optics have an optical axis, and the image realisation device includes a first image realisation surface at a first distance along the optical axis and a second image realisation surface at a second, different distance along the optical axis. The first and second image realisation surfaces overlap, and the first and second image realisation surfaces include multiple regions, each region switchable between a transparent state and an image realisation state such that the source image may be formed on a region of the first or second image realisation surface and projected through the projection optics to render the display image on the display screen at a first or second apparent depth.

Multi-depth augmented reality display

An imaging system includes an image realisation device and projection optics for rendering a display image on a display screen. The image realisation device includes a first image realisation surface tilted relative to an optical axis such that a first point in a first region of the image realisation surface is at a first distance from the focal point of the projection optics and a second point in a second region of the image realisation surface is at a second different distance from the focal point of the projection optics. A first source image formed on the first region and projected through the projection optics renders the first display image on the display screen at a first apparent depth, and a second source image formed on the second region and projected through the projection optics renders the second display image on the display screen at a second apparent depth.

The device comprises a first lens having a fixed focal length, and an imaging element arranged to send light into the first lens. The imaging element is configured to send the light from different positions within a defined distance on the optical axis of the first lens, in order to produce different depth layers of the 3D light field within a frame duration.

The present invention provides a display system for displaying image data. The display system comprises a light source; a spatial light modulator including a plurality of controllable reflective elements; a light source controller, configured to control the light source to emit, in each of a plurality of time intervals, light with a different illumination power level, wherein the time intervals have the same length; and a spatial light modulator controller, configured to activate, based on received image data, the plurality of controllable elements for at least one of the time intervals for directing the light from the light source for display the image data. Accordingly, the frame rate and bandwidth of the display system are increased significantly so as to be suitable for the light filed applications.

We describe a space-division multiplexed (SDM) fibre, reconfigurable, wavelength-selective switch (WSS). The switch comprises a space-division multiplexed (SDM) optical input port to receive a space-division multiplexed (SDM) optical input signal comprising a plurality of space division modes each of said space division modes carrying a respective data signal, wherein each of said space division modes is also wavelength division multiplexed (WDM); an optical space division demultiplexer, coupled to said input port, to split said space-division multiplexed (SDM) optical input signal into a plurality of space division demultiplexed optical signals on separate demultiplexer outputs of said demultiplexer, each said demultiplexer output of said demultiplexer comprising a wavelength division multiplexed one of said plurality of space division modes; a set of reconfigurable wavelength-selective optical switches, each reconfigurable wavelength-selective optical switch having a switch input and a set of N switch outputs, and each including a dispersive element and a controllable beam steering element such that each said reconfigurable wavelength-selective optical switch is reconfigurable to selectively direct different respective wavelengths of a WDM optical signal at said switch input to different selected outputs of said set of N switch outputs, and wherein each said demultiplexer output is coupled to said switch input of a respective one of said set of reconfigurable wavelength-selective optical switches; and a set of optical space division multiplexers, one for each of said N switch outputs, each said optical space division multiplexer having a set of multiplexer inputs and a multiplexer output, to re-multiplex optical signals at said multiplexer inputs into a space-division multiplexed optical output signal at said multiplexer output, and wherein, for each of said set of optical space division multiplexers, each multiplexer input of said set of multiplexer inputs is coupled to said switch output of a different respective one of said set of reconfigurable wavelength-selective optical switches.

A spatial phase modulator and a method for producing a spatial phase modulator are provided. The spatial phase modulator includes a first substrate and a second substrate that are meshed together, and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the two substrates, where a transparent electrode layer and a first alignment and guiding layer are disposed in a cascading manner on a side that is of the first substrate and that faces the liquid crystal layer; and an electrode layer and an insulation medium glass layer are disposed in a cascading manner on a side that is of the second substrate and that faces the liquid crystal layer, where the insulation medium glass layer has an inclined serration structure on a side facing the liquid crystal layer.

An image display system is provided and includes: at least one first projection unit, configured to project rays of N images on a first plane, so that the rays of the N images are projected on N first regions of the first plane, where the N images are images of a target object photographed based on N angles, and N&#x2265;2; and at least one first refraction unit, configured on the first plane, and configured to perform refraction processing on the rays of the images projected on the first regions, so that the rays of the N images are collected on a common display region. In this way, presentation of a three-dimensional image can adapt to a human eye viewing habit.

Methods and devices for manipulating optical signals. In one example, a LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) device includes a surface bearing an anti-reflection structure. The anti-reflection structure includes i) a physical surface having a topography with features having lateral dimensions of less than 2000 nm and having an average refraction index which decreases with distance away from the surface; and ii) a configuration of the topography, averaged over lateral dimensions of greater than 2000 nm, varies with lateral position on the surface.

Optical device and methods

We describe a multimode reconfigurable optical spatial mode multiplexing system having first and second first and second input beams and a beam combiner to combine these into an optical output. At least one of the paths comprises a polarisation-independent reconfigurable phase modulator to impose a controllable phase profile on an input beam in an input beam phase modulating optical path, to controllably convert a spatial mode order of the input beam from a lower to a higher order spatial mode. The system also has a control input to control the phase modulator to configure the phase profile for the mode conversion. The input beams are combined into a multiple spatial mode combined beam output independent of a polarisation of the input beams. The number of spatial modes of the combined beam can be more than a number of spatial modes in either of the first and second input beams separately.
