Methods for recovering valuable compounds and substances from plants after distillation of oils are disclosed. The methods involve various aqueous and non-aqueous solvent extraction of plant material from which oils have been distilled previously.

Recovery of residual plant components after distillation of essential oils

Novel compositions and methods for improving vanillin production in culturedand in intact plants are provided. Transgenic cells and plants having improved vanillin production are also provided.

Vanillin production

The invention provides a process for stimulating the multiplication, differentiation or somatic embryogenesis of higher plant cells in tissue culture by the addition to the culture medium an effective amount of extensin preparation derived from higher plant tissue. Also, provided are tissue cultures which have such stimulating amount of extensin present. Finally, provided by the invention is the sterile extensin preparation which has the stimulating activity, preferably the extensin used being pure or substantially pure.
