An identification document includes a card structure including a plastic material, a surface of the card structure including a first surface region that includes a plurality of depressions formed in the surface according to a predefined pattern; and a second surface region that includes a majority of a surface area of the identification document, wherein the second surface region is non-porous. A surface energy of the surface in the first surface region is greater than a surface energy of the surface in the second surface region.

An identification document includes a first layer and a second layer fused to the first layer. The first layer and the second layer include polyester, and the identification document is non-delaminable. Forming the identification document includes providing variable data on a surface of a first layer including polyester, aligning the first layer and a second layer including polyester, and fusing the first layer and the second layer to yield a fused identification document.

Techniques are described to embed graphical identifiers into a ghost image within a layer of laminate of an identification document. The ghost image includes optically variable media that has a first appearance when viewed from a front of the identification document in reflected light at a first angle and a second, different appearance when viewed from the front of the identification document in reflected light in a second, different angle. During the ghost image generation process, a graphical identifier can be placed on a baseline ghost image to generate an adjusted ghost image. Once the adjusted ghost image is printed onto the identification document, the graphical identifier can be viewable based on the appearance of the adjusted ghost identifier in relation to the reflected light.

An identification document including a multilayer laminate having a core layer defining an opening therethrough, and a dynamic window in the opening. The dynamic window includes an optically variable coating on at least a front or a back of the dynamic window. The optically variable coating appears transparent when viewed from the front of the identification document in light transmitted through the dynamic window from the back of the identification document toward the front of the identification document, and appears nontransparent when viewed from the front of the identification document in light reflected from the front of the identification document. Fabricating an identification document with a dynamic window includes forming an opening in a core layer, positioning a dynamic window in the opening, and plate laminating the core layer and the dynamic window between at least one outer layer on each side of the core layer.

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for applying a ghost image to an identification document that include the actions of obtaining a first image of an object. Identifying a first portion of the first image that corresponds with the object and a second portion of the first image that does not correspond with the object. Generating a second image by converting the first image to a negative image, and removing the second portion of the first image that does not correspond to the object. Generating a halftone image from the second image. Causing optically variable media to be applied to the identification document based on the halftone image. The optically variable media has a first appearance when viewed from in reflected light at a first angle and a second, different appearance when viewed in reflected light at a second, different angle.

A method for creating an identification document that includes: defining a debossed region on a surface of a card blank, the debossed region having a pre-determined pattern being indented into the card blank; and applying, as part of a lamination process, an overlay on the surface of the card blank to cover the defined debossed region such that an air gap is formed on the card blank's surface during the lamination process and is sealed and removed after the lamination process, and that a tactile pattern thus created on the surface of the overlay substantially duplicates the pre-determined pattern of the defined debossed region.

A forensic feature for a secure document comprises a base document layer and a covert material applied to the base document layer. The covert material includes a carrier and forensic material within the carrier. The forensic material includes a ratio of salts or oxides of metals, such as rare earth metals. The ratio is selected to correspond with a source of the document. The forensic material may be mixed into a coating or ink that is applied at predetermined locations on a secure document. The ratio is then measurable from metal ion signals of the salts or oxides. This ratio, or some metric derived from it, may be linked with information embedded elsewhere in the document to enable verification of the document. Another forensic document feature has a forensic metric that is measurable from a covert material in the document, and this forensic metric corresponds to a source of the document. A blocking layer applied over the covert material prevents access to the covert material such that at least partial destruction of the document is required to measure the forensic metric. The blocking layer may have a blocking property that blocks electromagnetic waves from activating the covert material, or blocks the electromagnetic waves from the covert material in response to the activating waves. The blocking layer is deconstructed to access the forensic feature, verify the document and perform forensic tracking.

A card with a magnetic stripe and increased durability is described. A protective lamina or coating may be disposed on a card with a magnetic stripe to protect the magnetic stripe embedded into the card from scratches, fractures, or chemical damage. An adhesive in the protective lamina is compatible with a material composition of the magnetic stripe such that the bond established onto the card surface is also accomplished with the magnetic stripe. The magnetic stripe has high coercivity and is overlaminated. The overlamination is performed across the entire rear side of the card. Accordingly, stress lines in cards with magnetic stripes can be avoided thereby significantly reducing cracking and fractures in cards.

Personal data may be embedded in a kinegram of an identification document using a suitable low energy laser without compromising the integrity of the kinegram or the identification document. The personal data can be written in a metalized portion of the kinegram in a high definition, high resolution manner such that the personal data may be read by a human without the use of a text-enhancing viewer device (e.g., magnifying glasses). Additional personal data can be written in a reduced text size (e.g., micro-text) in another metalized portion of the kinegram such that a human must use a text-enhancing viewer device to view the micro-text personal data.

System and method for laser writing

An ID document includes a document core and a multi-layer laminate. The multi-layer laminate includes at least three layers: a top layer, a middle layer, and a bottom layer. The top layer, in combination with other layers, provides durability to the ID document. The top layer can be made of a material with strong intrusion or scratch resistance and a high thermal softening/deformation point and can also have high resistance to solvents. The middle layer may be made of a material with a low melting point, and may also have high resistance to solvents. The bottom layer helps to facilitate strong binding to the document core or inlay and may be made of a material with a relatively high melting point.

The invention relates to identification documents, and in particular to pre-printing processing covert images, such as UV or IR images, provided on such identification documents. In one implementation, the invention provides a method of processing a digital image that is to be printed on a surface of an identification document as a fluorescing-capable image to improve the quality of the image. Edges or boundaries are detected within the image, the detected edges or boundaries forming an intermediate image. The edges or boundaries within the image are emphasized, and the emphasized image is used for printing the covert image. In some implementations of the invention, a digital watermark is embedded in the covert image.
