A base station () assigns a set of mobile stations () to a group wherein the group will share a set of radio resources (). A shared control channel information element () is sent to the group of mobile stations () and provides a bitmap having fields for group ordering (), resource allocations (), continuation resources () for HARQ, and an ordering pattern (). If a mobile station requires retransmission it will access the resources indicated by the continuation resources field () in order to receive data. The HARQ blocks may be assigned to a mobile station based upon an index () which may correspond to the mobile station vocoder rate. Further, HARQ subgroups may be defined to associate subgroups of mobile stations with specific HARQ transmission opportunities on the super-frame and allocated by a rotating bitmap.

The present invention discloses a system and a method for memory-based predistortion to reduce the distortion effects introduced by a power amplifier. The distortion effects include both memoryless and memory effects. The input and the corresponding output values of the power amplifier are measured to determine models used for predistortion. Using these models, first, an amplitude memory signal representing the amplitude memory effects of the power amplifier is obtained. Then, the amplitude memory signal is subtracted from the input signal. On the resulting signal, memoryless amplitude predistortion and memory-based phase predistortion are performed to get a predistorted signal. Further, an inverse model of the linear response of the power amplifier is implemented on the predistorted signal. Finally, the output of the inverse model is amplified by the power amplifier to obtain an output signal having reduced memoryless and memory-based effects.

An apparatus for processing base band signals and method thereof to provide low level signals for amplification that will improve performance of a multi-channel transmitter. The apparatus includes a first Transform Matrix (TM) coupled to one or more input signals; a processing unit coupled to the output signals for modifying according to a predetermined algorithm each of the output signals to provide modified output signals; a second TM coupled to the modified output signals for decomposing the modified signals, each of the output base band signals corresponding to one of the input signals; and a compensation function arranged and inter-coupled to either the modified output signals or the output base band signals. The transmitter further converts the output base band signals to radio frequency signals. A sampler couples either the amplifier input signal or output signal back to the compensation function as a feedback signal.

In a digital preprocessing system for processing a digital signal for analog transmission, the digital signal is up-sampled to produce a digital up-sampled signal having signal components in a plurality of Nyquist bands including a first Nyquist band and a plurality of super-Nyquist bands at higher frequencies than the first Nyquist band, wherein the first Nyquist band includes a baseband signal component and a plurality of aliased signal components. Thereafter, one of the plurality of signal components in the first Nyquist band is selected from the digital up-sampled signal. Finally, the selected one of the plurality of signal components is output at a frequency that will cause a digital to analog converter to output an aliased signal component in a super-Nyquist band nearer an anticipated peak amplitude of a filtering characteristic of the digital to analog converter than an aliased signal component in the super-Nyquist band that would be output by the digital to analog converter processing the baseband signal component.

A multi-channel digital transceiver (400) receives uplink radio frequency signals and converts these signals to digital intermediate frequency signals. Digital signal processing, including a digital converter module (426), is employed to select digital intermediate frequency signals received at a plurality of antennas (412) and to convert these signals to baseband signals. The baseband signals are processed to recover a communication channel therefrom. Downlink baseband signals are also processed and digital signal processing within the digital converter module (426) up converters and modulates the downlink baseband signals to digital intermediate frequency signals. The digital intermediate frequency signals are converted to analog radio frequency signals, amplified and radiated from transmit antennas (420).
