A process of producing an overhead transmission conductor. The process comprises: (a) continuously hot rolling a bar of AA 1350 aluminum or a similar aluminum alloy to form a rod; (b) hot-coiling the rod at a temperature preferably in a range of about 300 to 400&#xb0; C. to provide an aluminum electrical conductor rod having an electrical conductivity in a range of 61.8 to 64.0% IACS and a tensile strength in a range of 8,500 to 14,000 psi; (c) without subjecting the rod to an annealing treatment, drawing the rod into wire: and (d) stranding the wire into cable to form the overhead transmission conductor. The invention also relates to an ACSS conductor produced by the process.

Process of producing overhead transmission conductor

A method of fabricating a bare aluminum electrical conductor including a step of heat treating the conductor while wound on a winding form. The method comprises the step of coating the outer surface of the aluminum conductor with an inorganic powder material prior to winding the wire or cable on the winding form. The invention also relates to a method of protecting an aluminum conductor from damage during heat treatment and shipment when wound on a winding form. This method comprises providing a layer of aluminum or aluminum alloy between said conductor and parts of said winding form that would contact said wound conductor if not for said layer.

Method of fabricating a bare aluminum conductor

In a method of producing an extruded, cross-linked cable coating of filled polyethylene wherein the extruder is charged with commingled polyethylene pellets and filler-EPR masterbatch pellets containing a peroxide cross-linking agent, the peroxide is incorporated in the masterbatch pellets by application to and absorption in the pellets during advance of the pellets to the extruder, while the pellets are continuously maintained at an elevated temperature for preventing bleed-out of absorbed peroxide.
