A cable television multi-tap system for forwarding signals to multiple customers from a main cable, and for receiving individual return signals from respective subscribers includes a printed circuit board secured to the inside face of the respective tap plates of a plurality of multi-taps, respectively, with each printed circuit board including at least first and second electrical receptacles for receiving a selected one of a plurality of first and second plug-in modules, respectively, said plurality of first plug-in modules providing different levels of directional coupling, respectively, and said plurality of second plug-in modules providing individually one or a combination of different levels of forward equalization, return path or backward equalization, cable simulation, high tap value filtering, high pass filtering, low pass filtering, band rejection, shunting, and noise filtering to optimize the signal quality of signals forwarded from the headend of the system to subscribers, and return signals from subscribers back to the headend.

Multi-tap kit for cable television systems

A connecting port assembly of an electrical device comprises an internally threaded female port formed from a portion of a housing of an electrical device, where the female port is configured for threaded engagement with an externally threaded male coaxial cable connecting element. The connecting port assembly further comprises a seizure pin located within the female port where the seizure pin includes at one end a plurality of radially spaced-apart arcuate blades extending toward an opening of the female port with the blades being configured for therebetween receiving, mechanically retaining and electrically contacting a center conductor of the connecting element, and at another end being electrically connected to electrical circuitry located in other portions of the housing, and a collar assembly located around the plurality of blades within the female port, the collar assembly being configured to exert a radially inward compressive force around the plurality of blades for effecting contact and retainment by the plurality of blades with the center conductor in response to the advancement of an end portion of the connecting element into the female port.

Auto-seizing coaxial cable port for an electrical device

A female connector assembly for an electrically conductive coaxial cable, comprises an electrically conductive barrel shaped body having a top end with a centrally located hole forming an input port, and a bottom end configured for connecting with a portion of a housing of an electrical device. An electrically insulative hollow sleeve consisting of two interlocking cap members encloses an electrically conductive clip pin, and is contained within the body of the connector. The sleeve and clip pin are securely held within the body via connection of the body to a housing of an electrical device, and rigid attachment of an elongated pin extending from the sleeve, through a hole in the housing, to electrical circuitry within the housing.

A multi-tap 2 has two compartments 4,6, the first including input ports 46,48 for conducting RF signals (RF) and AC power (AC), a microstrip 206 for conducting the RF and AC from input ports 46,48 to a conductor 62 passing through a passageway 64 between compartments 4,6 for passing the RF and AC to the microstrip 206 in the compartment 6. The latter microstrip 206 conducts the RF and AC to output ports 78,82 at an end of the compartment 6 in a first operating configuration. In a second operating configuration, a wire 80 conducts RF and AC away from the output ports 78,82 to a microstrip 90 for conducting the RF and AC to a wire 94 passing through a passageway 96 between compartments 4,6 for further conducting the RF and AC to a microstrip 102 in compartment 4 to divert the RF and AC to alternative ouput ports 84,86 of compartment 4. Each microstrip 206 consists of resilient metal strips, and includes upwardly biased ends 216,218 which press against ridges 276 of conductor seizure cylinders 220,222, respectively, for insuring electrical circuit continuity when covers 10,12 are not in place on compartments 4,6, respectively. When covers 10,12 are in place thereon, conductive post pairs 138 and 142, and 128 and 132, respectively enter openings in cylinders 220,222, respectively, to reroute signals through circuit paths 130,140, respectively, and slidable cams 224,226 are activated by the covers 10,12 to break the electrical connection between the cylinders 220,222, and microstrips 206.

A hermetically sealed female connector for a coaxial cable, includes a barrel-shaped brass housing enclosing in the order given from a top end providing an input port to a bottom end, a rubber boot having a center portion partially protruding from a central hole in the top end, a first cap having an upper portion within the boot and a lower portion, a second cap having an upper portion contained within the lower portion of the first cap, the second cap also having a lower portion with a top edge abutting against the bottom of the first cap, a rubber washer with a top face abutting against the bottom of the second cap, a plastic washer with a top face abutting against the bottom face of the rubber washer, and a clip pin secured in the central longitudinal portion of the housing between the input port and the bottom end with an end of the clip pin protruding out of the bottom end of the housing, the bottom end of the housing being peened over to retain the connector components under compression for causing the rubber boot and rubber washer to form hermetic seals with interior walls of the housing and clip pin.

In junction boxes for coupling T.V. signals and low frequency power waves on a coax line to a plurality of users, the T.V. signals are coupled via connections in a first compartment to a plurality of coax cables, and the low frequency power wave are coupled via low pass-filters to IDC connections in a second compartment. Leads from users are passed through a chamber on the wall of the second compartment containing a self-healing, self-supporting insulating substance and attached to the IDC connectors. The IDC connectors permit the lead to be paired through them so that an installer can know when the leads are properly partitioned.

A tool is described for shunting a multi-tap for an RF cable system by connecting a low-pass filter between an unused input port and an unused output port of the multi-tap. The components of the filter are such as not to interfere with the circuits of the multi-tap when both are in the circuit. A light is provided for indicating when the tool is in operative position.

A multi-tap is described having two compartments, a microstrip in each compartment for conducting RF signals and AC power from an input at one end of the multi-tap to a first output port at the other end, a cover for each compartment having a circuit thereon that is substituted for the microstrip in a compartment when the cover closes that compartment, a device near the first output port that can be adjusted to direct RF signals and AC power passing through the microstrips to a point other than the first output port and additional microstrips for conducting RF signals and AC power from that point, when the RF signals and AC power are present thereat, to a second output port located near the input port. Grounding shields are provided for shorting the additional microstrips when the device is adjusted to deliver RF signals and AC power to the first output port. When the cover of a compartment is closed, it activates a switches formed in part by ends of the microstrips.

Hermetically sealed electrical connection to a junction box

A multi-tap device for tapping a main TV or rf signal to deliver attenuated signals to individual TV receivers includes a pair of socket assemblies for receiving input and output pins of a plug-in tap plate or printed circuit board carrying necessary attenuation/tap off circuitry. The socket assemblies connect the input pin to a main input cable for receiving the main rf signal and ac power, and connect the output pin to a main output cable or continuation of the main cable, for distributing the main rf signal(s) and ac power to cascaded down line multi-tap devices. A shunt printed circuit board is mounted between the socket assemblies, and has an rf/ac conductive strip for connection at either end to switches built into each socket assembly. As a tap plate is removed or unplugged from the socket assemblies, the switches operate to close before the input and output pins are electrically disconnected from sockets of the socket assemblies, for electrical connecting the input and output cables together to insure that the rf signals and ac power is continuously delivered to down line multi-tap devices without interruption.
