Disclosed is a receiver for receiving an optical signal comprising a plurality of carriers within a predetermined frequency band. The receiver comprises means for sampling and converting each of the carriers into a set of corresponding digital signals, and a digital processing unit for processing said digital signals of said set of digital signals such as to mitigate transmission impairments of the corresponding optical carriers based on corresponding processing parameters. The digital processing unit is configured for determining such processing parameters by carrying out a corresponding parameter derivation procedure based on one of the digital signals of said set of digital signals. The processing unit is configured for sharing thus determined processing parameters for processing of other digital signals among said set of digital signals based on said shared determined processing parameters, or processing parameters derived from said shared determined processing parameters.

Processing parameter and resource sharing architecture for superchannel based transmission systems

Disclosed herein is a method of transmitting a data stream from a first location to a second location through an optical network, as well as a corresponding performance monitoring unit, a transmitting arrangement and a receiving arrangement. The method comprises the steps of transmitting said data stream from said first location to said second location along a working path, wherein said data stream is transmitted in the form of a super channel comprising a number of n wavelengths within a predefined reserved wavelength range, monitoring the performance of the transmission based on the super channel signal received at said second location, and in case the performance is observed to drop below a predetermined performance threshold, unburdening the super channel from a part of said data stream while maintaining the reserved wavelength range for said super channel, by redirecting said part of the data stream for transmittal along at least one restoration path connecting said first and second locations, and transmitting the remainder of said data stream within the super channel on a number of wavelengths that is less than n, and/or with a reduced transmission rate for at least some of the wavelengths in said super channel.

Subcarrier diversity in optical communication systems

Disclosed herein is a method for transmitting digital data in a super channel, in which a set of carriers are packed in a predetermined bandwidth. The set of carriers comprises higher and lower edge carriers having the highest and lowest wavelengths, respectively, among said set of earners, wherein data is transmitted via the higher and lower edge carriers using a corresponding modulation format, each modulation format using a constellation diagram comprising a number of symbols, wherein a binary address is associated with each symbol. Said method comprises the steps of: separating digital data to be transmitted via each of said higher and lower edge carriers into corresponding first and second data streams, and for each of said higher and lower edge carriers, mapping the data of the first data stream to predetermined first bit positions within the binary symbol addresses and the data of the second data stream to predetermined second bit positions within the binary symbol addresses, wherein said first bit positions are bit positions which have an error probability less than the average error probability of all bit positions.

Method and apparatus for transmitting data in a super channel

Enclosed herewith is a method for protecting a link in an optical network configured for transmitting digital data employing a predetermined modulation format which comprises a number of symbols in a constellation diagram. A binary address is associated with each symbol. The modulation format allows for a constellation distortion, according to which the relative positions of constellation points in the constellation diagram are varied in a predetermined way by a predetermined degree. The method the steps of: A) partitioning the traffic in two or more priority classes, B) mapping higher priority traffic to predefined bit positions within the binary symbol addresses, C) evaluating the quality of a predetermined protection link, D) determining a degree of distortion such that a desired transmission quality for the transmission of the traffic of the highest priority class or classes via said predetermined protection link and a desired transmission quality for the full traffic via said given link are simultaneously ensured, and E) employing said distorted constellation diagram for transmission of digital data over said given link.

A method and apparatus for performing event-driven diagnostics and/or prognostics of a network behaviour of a hierarchical optical network comprising the steps of recording at least one set of historical multi-level events representing different hierarchy levels of said optical network; mining of machine learned event patterns within the recorded multi-level events; mapping the determined mined event patterns to a multi-level network topology of said optical network and/or to a channel connectivity of channels through said optical network; and matching observed real-time multi-level target events of said optical network with at least one of the previously determined mined event patterns and performing a unified cause and effect analysis of network states and/or network components of said optical network for a recognized matching event pattern using the network topology and/or channel connectivity associated with the matching event pattern.

An apparatus and method for optimizing dynamically the performance of an optical network, said apparatus comprising at least one learning engine adapted to update a learning model in response to network metrics of said optical network collected during operation of said optical network, wherein the updated learning model is used to generate channel rank information for network channels; and a recommendation engine adapted to change a network channel throughput, a signal path and/or a spectral location of at least one network channel based on the channel rank information generated by the learning model of said learning engine.

Method and apparatus for optimizing dynamically the operation of an optical network

A system for proactive traffic restoration in a network includes at least one forecasting engine that models and forecasts traffic patterns of at least one traffic channel along a signal path of the network to provide forecast traffic quality metrics, y. The system further includes at least one time-to-failure, TTF, analyzer that calculates a time-to-failure, TTF, forecast for the traffic channel based on the forecast traffic quality metrics, y. The calculated time-to-failure, TTF, forecast is evaluated to trigger a proactive network traffic restoration.
