A method of inhibiting the growth of leukemic hematopoietic stem cells in a subject with leukemia is described. The method includes administering a therapeutically effective amount of a composition including a compound of formula I: I wherein Ris independently selected from hydrogen and methyl; Ris selected from the group consisting of 4,8-dimethyl-non-1-enyl, 4,8-dimethyl-nonyl, non-1-enyl, and nonanyl groups; X is a carboxyl, phosphonic, or sulfonic moiety, and n is an integer from 1 to 6, or a compound of Formula II: II wherein Ris a C-Calkyl or C-Calkoxy group; Ris independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methoxy, and hydroxyl; and Ris an alkyl or cycloalkyl group; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 

Inhibition of leukemic stem cells by PP2A activating agents

The invention provides for methods of treating a mammal who has a BCR/ABL-mediated leukemia, including chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), particularly the blast crisis stage of CML, Philadelphia-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph'-ALL), and refractory leukemias. The invention also provides for compounds for the treatment of these leukemias and methods of identifying anti-leukemic agents.

Therapeutic agents for the treatment of leukemia

Methods&#x2014;for treatment and prevention of lymphoid malignancies, including, but not limited to acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), B-cell lymphoma, Acute Myeloid leukemia (AML), and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). The methods include administration of a therapeutically effective amount of FTY720 (2-Amino-2-[2-(4-octylphenyl)ethyl]propane 1,3-diol hydrochloride) or a derivative, pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or a prodrug thereof to a subject.
