System, methods, and other embodiments described herein relate to implementing risk-bounded control barrier functions. In one embodiment, a method includes estimating a state of a vehicle; planning a trajectory based on the state of the vehicle; determining a nominal control input based on the trajectory; applying a risk-bounded control barrier function to determine a control input; and applying the control input to the vehicle.

The resonator includes a flexible, tube-shaped resonator body having a first end, a second end, and a channel fluidically connecting the first end and the second end. A morphing structure includes a deployable aerodynamic origami structure with an outer covering having a plurality of creases, a tether attached to the deployable origami structure, and a light-responsive polymer disposed on one or more of the creases of the outer covering. The light-responsive polymer is configured to change shape when activated by a light and the deployable origami structure configured to change from a first shape to a second shape different than the first shape when the light-responsive polymer is activated. In some variations, the morphing structure also includes at least one heating element disposed on one or more of the creases of the outer covering and the at least one heating element is configured to heat the light-responsive polymer such that the shape of the deployable aerodynamic origami structure moves from the second shape to the first shape.

Systems and methods are provided that implement spatio-temporal query of perception data streams. A system is distinctly designed to implement efficient and flexible spatio-temporal queries, which conduct pattern matching over perception data streams for automotive applications, particularly autonomous vehicles. The system is also designed to enable the spatio-temporal queries to be expressed in SpREs (Spatial Regular Expressions), which is implemented as a querying language that combines the ease of REs (regular expressions) with the enhanced capabilities of spatial logic. Additionally, a method includes receiving a command associated with a spatio-temporal query, wherein the expression comprises spatial regular expressions (SpREs). Thereafter, performing the spatio-temporal query of a plurality of perception data streams using the SpREs, where the SpREs describe spatio-temporal patterns to be searched within the plurality of perception data streams.

A system and related method can self-adaptively absorb a flexural wave acting on a beam. The method includes the steps of receiving an input signal representing a frequency response of a flexural wave acting on the beam, determining a spring constant for absorbing the flexural wave based on the input signal, a damping value of a damper acting on the beam, and a mass value of a mass acting on the beam, and applying a spring constant voltage based on the spring constant to a piezoelectric device connected to the beam. The piezoelectric device has a variable spring value that varies based on the voltage applied to the piezoelectric device. The piezoelectric device's variable spring value is approximately equal to the spring constant value when the spring constant voltage is applied to the piezoelectric device.

Systems, methods, and other embodiments described herein relate to navigating a trailer after the physical connection between a vehicle and trailer disconnects. In one embodiment, a method includes responsive to determining that a physical connection between a vehicle and a trailer has disconnected, determining trajectory information for navigating the trailer without a connection to the vehicle. The method includes communicating the trajectory information to the trailer to cause the trailer to follow a trajectory associated with the vehicle. The method includes monitoring whether the trailer is following the trajectory.

Systems, methods, and other embodiments described herein relate to vehicle headliners. In one embodiment, a method includes detecting, with a controller connected to a first impact feature of a headliner of a vehicle, a physical contact with the first impact feature with the first impact feature having a first bending strength prior to the physical contact. The controller subsequently activates the first impact feature to transition the first impact feature from the first bending strength to a second bending strength in response to the detected physical contact.

The first support portion rotatably coupled to the second support portion and at least one of the first support portion and the second support portion is movable relative to the other of the first support potion and the second support portion. First and second actuation arms extend from the first and second support portions, respectively. An artificial muscle drive unit couples the first actuation arm to the second actuation arm, the artificial muscle drive unit including one or more artificial muscles expandable in a movement direction to provide a movement force to at least one of the first support portion and the second support portion.

A device for canceling acoustic noise generated includes, in one example, an inlet channel configured to be fluidly connected to an inlet port of a pump and an outlet channel configured to be fluidly connected to an outlet port of the pump. The adaptive energy absorption module includes a primary deformable impact absorber member defining a primary impact chamber having a shape that is structurally adaptive or otherwise conforms to an impact force received by the bumper body. A secondary deformable impact absorber member is arranged in the primary impact chamber and defines a secondary impact chamber containing a shear thickening fluid that exhibits a decreasing viscosity responsive to the impact force. A plurality of fluidically connected tertiary deformable impact absorber members are arranged in an array the primary impact chamber and defines a plurality of tertiary impact chambers containing a volume of fluid, and has a shape that is structurally adaptive to the impact force.

Embodiments for one-way sound absorbing systems are described herein. In one example, a sound absorbing system includes a waveguide having open ends for receiving an incoming acoustic wave and wall portions defining a first port and a second port. A first electroacoustic absorber is mounted to the first port and is electrically connected to a shunting circuit, while a second electroacoustic absorber is mounted to the second port and is electrically connected to an open circuit. The sound absorption of the system is directional dependent.
