A co-injection process is provided for fabricating improved multi-layer containers, including but not limited to blood collection tubes, evacuated blood collection tubes, culture bottles, centrifuges tubes, and syringe barrels. The container includes a tube () having a bottom wall () and a side wall () with an open end (). The container can be provided with a stopper having an upper portion () and a skirt with an outside portion (), a well () and a cavity (). The tube and stopper assembly can be used for medical purposes including containing a blood sample within an enclosed interior space ().

Process for forming multilayer containers

A plurality of container assemblies are provided. Each container assembly has substantially identical external dimensions. However, the internal volumes of certain container assemblies differ from the internal volumes of other container assemblies. The container assemblies are configured in accordance with the required volume of material to be collected or maintained in the respective container assemblies and to enable uniform head spaces despite the different volumes of materials in the respective container assemblies. Each container assembly may have an inner container and an outer container. The inner and outer containers may be assembled together or formed integrally by molding.

Collection assembly

The present invention is a container assembly that includes an inner tube formed from a plastic that is substantially inert to bodily fluids and an outer tube that is formed from a different plastic. Collectively, the container assembly is useful for providing an effective barrier against gas and water permeability in the assembly and for extending the shelf-life of the container assembly, especially when used for blood collection.
