The current disclosure relates to an anode material with the general formula MSb-M'O&#x2014;C, where M and M&#x2032; are metals and M&#x2032;O&#x2014;C forms a matrix containing MSb. It also relates to an anode material with the general formula MSn-M&#x2032;C&#x2014;C, where M and M&#x2032; are metals and M&#x2032;C&#x2014;C forms a matrix containing MSn. It further relates to an anode material with the general formula MoSb&#x2014;C, where &#x2014;C forms a matrix containing MoSb. The disclosure also relates to an anode material with the general formula MSb-M&#x2032;C&#x2014;C, where M and M&#x2032; are metals and M&#x2032;C&#x2014;C forms a matrix containing MSb. Other embodiments of this disclosure relate to anodes or rechargeable batteries containing these materials as well as methods of making these materials using ball-milling techniques and furnace heating.
