Various example embodiments are disclosed herein. According to an example embodiment, a technique may include transmitting, from a mobile station to a base station in a wireless network, a message (e.g., a subscriber station basic capability (SBC) request message) indicating whether or not the mobile station supports base station-controlled handover for the mobile station. The technique may also include receiving, by the mobile station from the base station, a message (e.g., a subscriber station basic capability (SBC) response message) indicating whether or not the base station supports base-station controlled handover.

Signaling exchange for handover control for wireless networks

To prevent a handover ping-pong effect between base-station in WiMAX-compliant networks, a priority level is assigned to the trigger causes for handover, and the prioritized causes are coded. Then codes are subdivided into a first class of unrestricted handovers and a second class of restricted handovers. The first class includes the highest priority handovers. The second class includes a subset of handovers with a high or normal priority intended for optimizing resources. Outside this subset the second class also includes handovers for power budget having a normal priority level. When an outgoing handover is decided, the actual serving BS permits or selectively suppresses the Handover Request to the target BS when the latter corresponds to the preceding serving BS for that mobile. The selection mechanism operates on the second class of restricted handovers, during a penalty time triggered by the occurrence of handover causes included in the second class subset.

Method for preventing ping-pong handover effect in mobile WiMAX networks

Handover of a mobile station (MS) from a serving base station (BS) to a target base station in a mobile communication system supporting both MS-initiated handover and BS-initiated handover, is coordinated by ensuring that, both in the case of BS-initiated handover and in the case of MS-initiated handover: the mobile station (MS) and the base station (BS) share information, either via a MO_BSHO-REQ message sent from the BS to the MS in the case of BS-initiated HO or via a MO_MSHO-RETQ message sent from the MS to the BS in the case of MS-initiated HO, indicating a target base station for the mobile station (MS) to attempt handover; and the mobile station (MS) sends an information message (M0B_H0-IND) indicating the base station to which handover was attempted.

Method, system and devices for supporting handover in mobile communication networks

A method for improving distributed resource allocation in OFDMA based wireless communication networks such as WiMAX IEEE 802.16 for either fixed or mobile subscriber stations SSs is executed by neighbor Base Stations BSs serving the SSs. Each BS controls the allocation of respective permutation zones and radio resources encompassing different radio subchannels within each permutation zone. In this task the BS avails of RRM primitives and instances of a NCMS functionality promoting direct BS-to-BS communication, which can be exploited in a distributed RRM profile. A BS playing the role of RRC sends to Neighbor BSs a unique RRM Request for receiving event-driven Spare Capacity Reports. Among driving events, 'Change of Radio Resources Allocation' is included. Neighbor BSs, at every allocation change is detected, send to the requester BS a Spare Capacity Report including a Bitmap indicating subchannels used for transmission in each Permutation Zone. In order to eliminate Co-Channel Interference CCI, the requester BS avoids using same subchannels already indicated in the received Bitmap.

Radio resource allocation information exchange between base stations

A method for centralized radio resource allocation in a communication network including a Network Control and Management System and at least one Base Station Cluster having a set of Base Station Entities to which respective permutation zones and radio resources are to be allocated. The Network Control and Management System controls the allocation of permutation zones and radio resources to the Base Station Entities by aligning the permutation zones of different Base Station Entities and by determining the radio resources to be used within each permutation zone. Preferably, the Network Control and Management System issues towards the Base Station Entities a first message requesting information on the radio resources available including specific information items for each permutation zone. The Base Station Entities return towards the Network Control and Management System a second message including the information requested in said first message, and the Network Control and Management System issues towards the Base Station Entities a third message including commands to align the permutation zones of different Base Station Entities to determine the radio resources to be used within each permutation zone.
