A communication system includes a plurality of radio chains, each configured to generate an electrical signal having a predetermined frequency that is distinct that of the other radio chains. One or more antennas are connected to the plurality of radio chains to emit and/or receive an electromagnetic signal with a frequency corresponding to that of the electrical signal generated by the radio chains, and an electronic selection circuit has inputs connected to the radio chains and one or more outputs connected to the antennas, which are configured to selectively emit the electromagnetic signal associated with each radio chain according to distinct and different radiation patterns. An electronic medical system is described. The system comprises an external RF power transmitter configured to emit a first power signal via an electromagnetic coupling, said RF power transmitter being configured to emit said first energy signal with a power no greater than 1 W. The system further comprises an implantable medical device comprising: at least one receiver antenna configured to receive said first energy signal via an electromagnetic coupling; an RF power receiver module configured to extract a second energy signal having a power of at least 1 mW and to be powered by said second energy signal; a power actuator module, operatively connected to the RF power receiver module, powered by said second energy signal. The power actuator module is configured to deliver a medical treatment to at least a target tissue of a patient on the basis of a control signal generated by the RF power receiver module.

A planar reconfigurable antenna that is capable of generating omnidirectional and directional radiation patterns over a wide frequency band or over multiple frequency bands includes a substrate, one or more pairs of conductive elements on at least one side of the substrate, a common RF feed point, and respective switches that selectively connects one or all of the conductive elements to the common RF feed point. An omni-directional radiation pattern is generated when all of the conductive elements are connected to the common RF feed point, while a directional radiation pattern is generated when only a pair of conductive elements on opposite sides of the substrate are connected to the common RF feed point. In the directional radiation mode, the conductive elements that are not connected to the common RF feed point act as a reflector for other conductive elements that are connected to the common RF feed point.

Wide band reconfigurable planar antenna with omnidirectional and directional radiation patterns

A method allows reconfigurable multi-element antennas to select the antenna configuration in MIMO, SIMO and MISO communication system. This selection scheme uses spatial correlation, channel reciprocal condition number, delay spread and average Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) information to select the antenna radiation pattern at the receiver. Using this approach, it is possible to achieve capacity gains in a multi-element reconfigurable antenna system without modifying the data frame of a conventional wireless communication system. The capacity gain achievable with this configuration selection approach is calculated through numerical simulations using reconfigurable circular patch antennas at the receiver of a MIMO system that employs minimum mean square error receivers for channel estimation. Channel capacity and Bit Error Rate (BER) results show the improvement offered relative to a conventional antenna selection technique for reconfigurable MIMO systems.

Systems and methods for selecting reconfigurable antennas in MIMO systems

The invention relates to a reconfigurable antenna system (), which comprises a plurality of antenna units () and does not employ phase shifters. Each antenna unit () is by itself a reconfigurable antenna having at least an active radiating element which is coupled to one or more passive radiating elements. Each antenna unit is provided with one or more variable loads () that can be electrically connected/disconnected to each other and with said antenna unit (), to selectively configure the radiating properties of the system. A bias network () is adopted to bias the variable loads () and a control unit () allows controlling the operation of said bias network (). Each active radiating element is fed by at least a feeding line () that provides it with a suitable polarization. Hence, the system can advantageously resort to multiple polarizations, each of them being provided by a same source. Preferably, each active radiating element receive its feeding signal from the source/s by means of power dividers () and/or switches. Preferably, each antenna unit is covered by at least a radiating structure, comprising a plurality of passive radiating elements, which does not affect the reconfigurability of the antenna unit itself and increases the overall antenna gain. The antenna system is then characterized by remarkable beam-steering capabilities and high gain, avoiding the losses and complexities related to phase shifters and overcoming the typically small antenna gain values of current reconfigurable antenna systems.

Reconfigurable antenna system

The present invention refers to a reconfigurable antenna structure. The antenna structure comprises a radiating structure comprising one or more first radiating elements and a secondary radiating structure, operationally associated with said primary radiating structure. Said secondary radiating structure comprises a plurality of second radiating elements that can be selectively electrically connected/disconnected to each other to vary the configuration of said secondary radiating structure, so as to vary the radiating properties of the antenna structure. The antenna structure also comprises first reactive loads, electrically connected between said primary and secondary radiating structures, and second reactive loads, electrically connected to said secondary radiating structure. Said first reactive loads, said second reactive loads and said second radiating elements forming one or more circuitry structures that are electrically resonant in the operating frequency band of said antenna structure and that are electrically connected/disconnected to each other in a selective manner in accordance to the configuration selected for said second radiating structure, thereby maintaining constantly equal to zero the overall reactive load that is electrically connected to said primary radiating structure.

Reconfigurable antenna structure

The invention relates to a method () for configuring a reconfigurable antenna system (). The method () comprises the following steps: a) selecting one or more groups of antenna configurations in a reference set of antenna configurations; and b) selecting one or more antenna configurations to be tested for each group of antenna configurations, which has been selected at the previous step a); and c) evaluating the radiating performance of said reconfigurable antenna system () for each antenna configuration, which has been selected at the previous step b), the radiating performance of said reconfigurable antenna system being evaluated on the base of estimation values that are calculated during one or more testing sessions of said reconfigurable antenna system; and d) selecting the optimal antenna configuration, for which said reconfigurable antenna system () has provided the best radiating performance during said testing sessions; and e) if the group of antenna configurations, to which said optimal antenna configuration belongs, comprises only said optimal antenna configuration, configuring said antenna elements () according to said optimal antenna configuration; or f) if the group of antenna configurations, to which said optimal antenna configuration belongs, comprises a plurality of antenna configurations, selecting said group of antenna configuration as new reference set of antenna configurations; and g) repeating the previous steps (a)-(d) for said new reference set of antenna configurations.

Method for configuring a reconfigurable antenna system

Reconfigurable antennas in an ad-hoc network are provided where all nodes employ MIMO/SIMO/MISO communication techniques. Three types of reconfigurable antennas: Reconfigurable Printed Dipole Array (RPDA), Reconfigurable Circular Patch Antenna (RCPA) and Two-Port Reconfigurable CRLH Leaky Wave Antennas are used. The RPDA, RCPA and the CRLH Leaky Wave antennas have a different number of configurations as well as different degrees of pattern diversity between possible configurations. To effectively use these antennas in a network, the performance of centralized and decentralized antenna configuration selection schemes are quantified for reconfiguration at one or both link ends. The sum capacity of the network is used as a metric to quantify the performance of these antennas in measured and simulated network channels.

Reconfigurable antennas and configuration selection methods for AD-HOC networks

The present invention refers to a reconfigurable antenna structure. The antenna structure comprises an active radiating structure comprising at least an active radiating element, a passive radiating structure comprising at least a passive radiating element, a ground plane structure comprising at least a ground plane element and at least a first circuitry element to selectively electrically connect/disconnect said passive radiating element with/from said ground plane element. The ground plane structure comprises regulating means of the current distribution along said ground plane structure, when said antenna structure emits/receives an electromagnetic radiation.

Reconfigurable antenna structure with parasitic elements

An electronic medical system is described. The system comprises an external RF power transmitter configured to emit a first power signal via an electromagnetic coupling, said RF power transmitter being configured to emit said first energy signal with a power no greater than 1 W. The system further comprises an implantable medical device comprising: at least one receiver antenna configured to receive said first energy signal via an electromagnetic coupling; an RF power receiver module configured to extract a second energy signal having a power of at least 1 milliwatts and to be powered by said second energy signal; a power actuator module, operatively connected to the RF power receiver module, powered by said second energy signal. An antenna apparatus may include a reflective layer connected to a ground, one or more first antennas disposed on the reflective layer, wherein each first antenna includes a first active element and one or more first parasitic elements; one or more first switching devices, each associated with corresponding one of the one or more first parasitic elements in at least one of one or more first antennas, one or more second antennas disposed on the reflective layer, wherein each second antenna includes a second active element and one or more second parasitic elements, and one or more second switching devices, each associated with corresponding one of the one or more second parasitic elements in at least one of one or more second antennas. The first antennas operate at a first frequency. The second antennas operate at a second frequency different from the first frequency.

Reconfigurable antenna apparatus

Leaky wave antennas that can be reconfigured in pattern and/or polarization by exploiting the characteristic of metamaterial structures loaded with variable capacitor and inductors employ a Composite Right Left Handed (CRLH) unit cell with two independent DC biases used to actively change the group delay of the transmission line and the polarization of the radiated field while preserving good impedance matching. Different degrees of pattern and polarization reconfigurability are achieved by cascading multiple of these unit cells along a straight line, a circular line or a zigzag line while preserving high gain for all the antenna configurations and good impedance matching.

Metamaterial reconfigurable antennas

An antenna system that allows increasing the reading reliability of RFId systems by dynamically changing the shape or the polarization of the electromagnetic field radiated by the RPId reader. The system includes at least one reconfigurable antenna, a variable DC bias unit and a methodology to efficiently use the system in RFId applications. The system allows changing the direction in which the energy is radiated or the polarization of the radiated field in order to 'move' the electromagnetic field and to also read RFid tags that receive faint signals with standard RFid systems. Polarization alignment between the reader's antenna and the transponder allows for maximum power transfer, while changing the direction of radiation allows concentrating the electromagnetic field towards the transponder.
