Digital signals are transmitted over a communication channel having a given bandwidth, by simultaneously transmitting: one or more Spread Spectrum signals, such as, Code Division Multiple Access signals, wherein the spectrum of the Spread Spectrum signals exhibits roll-off transition bands at the boundaries of the spectrum, and one or more multi-carrier transmission signals, such as, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing signals, which are transmitted over the transition bands of the Spread Spectrum signals.

A method for simulating a mobile telephone network with shared-access channels. The simulation method includes the steps of simulating at least a first and a second configuration of the mobile telephone network that are statistically independent one from the other. Each one of the steps of simulating includes at least the steps of: determining a number of mobile terminals generating a packet data traffic; assigning to a list of mobile terminals included in the number of mobile terminals generating a packet data traffic, at least one shared-access channel of the mobile telephone network to be simulated; and performing a scheduling management algorithm of the list of mobile terminals on the shared-access channel.

A video-communication service in a mobile communication network using a packet-switched connection, in which a monitoring of a radio channel portion is performed at the mobile stations of the users involved in the communication. Parameters of the video communication (e.g. the coding rate) are adjusted based on a result of the monitoring of the radio channel portion.

A method for controlling admission of calls to a mobile communication network having cells associated with at least one determined threshold level of operation suitable for managing cell shrinking phenomena. The method includes the operation of detecting call requests from a cell edge affected by such cell shrinking phenomena, variably exceeding the determined threshold level in uplink. A method for admitting calls to the mobile communication network in both uplink and downlink on the basis of the evaluation of the actual system load is also proposed. Preferred application is in UMTS mobile networks.

Method and system for controlling admission in mobile communication networks, related network and computer program product therefor

In a method of scheduling transmission services over a high speed packet access communication link such as a HSDPA and/or a HSUPA link a list of queues is created for transmission services to be provided over the link. The queues, which include both Real Time and Non Real Time queues, are allotted respective service priorities based e.g. on a channel quality indicator and/or a Quality of Service indicator to produce an ordered list of queues based on the service priorities. The link resources needed for serving at least one set of queues having higher priorities in the ordered list are estimated and a check is made. If these resources are available, the set of queues having higher priorities in the ordered list are served. If the resources required are not available, at least one queue is removed from the ordered list of queues.

Scheduling method and system for communication networks; corresponding devices, network and computer program product

A method of adjusting the transmission station parameters in a digital video broadcasting network, includes determining, in at least one area element of a geographic area of interest, delays among signals received from a plurality of transmission stations; calculating, based on the determined delays, transmission delays to be applied to the transmission stations of the plurality, wherein the calculated transmission delays are adapted to reduce the delays among the received signals; and applying the calculated transmission delays to the transmission stations of the plurality. The choice of the timing parameters is based on a repetition of a random perturbation of a control parameter and the consequent evaluation of the result of the result obtained.

Method of adjusting timing transmission parameters in a single frequency network

In a communication network, a node receives from user equipment information on the length of a queue of information units to be transmitted to the node from the user equipment. The information, for possible use by the node in scheduling transmission of these information units from the user equipment, is in the form of quantized queue length information indicative of a lower bound and an upper bound for the queue length. Transmission of information units from the user equipment to the node is detected at the node, and an improved estimate of the queue length is produced by correcting the lower bound and the upper bound via subtraction of the number of the detected information units transmitted from the user equipment to the node.

Method and system for handling queues in communication networks, corresponding computer program product

A method of distributing information content to at least two user equipments includes: setting up a common downlink channel common to the at least two user equipments; setting up at least two uplink channels, each uplink channel being dedicated to a respective one of the at least two user equipments; delivering the information content to the at least two user equipments over the common downlink channel; and controlling transmission powers related to the common downlink channel and the at least two uplink channels in a closed-loop fashion. The closed-loop fashion power control includes: receiving from the at least two user equipments common downlink channel quality indications over the respective dedicated uplink channels; adjusting a transmission power in respect to the common downlink channel based on the common downlink channel quality indications received from the user equipments; evaluating a channel quality with respect to each of the at least two dedicated uplink channels; and based on the evaluation, sending to the at least two user equipments a transmission power control command over the common downlink channel.

Method and system for transmitting content to a plurality of users of a mobile communication network

A method of operating a wireless communications network is adapted to provide services to users exploiting a first and a second different radio communications technologies, for example, an enhanced general packet radio service network. The method includes: providing, in a user profile available at the network, a subscription indication adapted to indicate that the user has subscribed for being provisioned with the network services through the first radio communication technology, upon reception by the network of a capability indication from the user adapted to indicate to the network that the user supports the first radio communications technology, looking up the user profile for the presence of the subscription indication; and in case the subscription indication is not found, handling the user as if supporting the second radio communications technology but not the first radio communications technology.

Method of operating a wireless communications network, and wireless communications network implementing the method

A method of evaluating the performance of a mobile telephone network having at least a first and a second simulation of a first and a second network configuration, respectively, which are statistically independent of each other. Each simulation includes the following steps: specifying a total number of users to be simulated; determining a sequence of activation of user blocks included in this total number of users to be simulated and indicating a traffic distribution; activating said user blocks in succession until the total number of users to be simulated is reached; and processing at least one radio resource management event relating to the traffic distribution associated with each currently activated user block. The simulations are repeated until a predetermined accuracy threshold is reached for each simulated network value.

Method for evaluating the performances of a mobile telephony network

A scheme substantially similar to that used in HSDPA (in which a downlink channel is provided for data transmission, and at least one associated control channel is provided for transmission of control information including information related to availability of a portion of the transmitted data for the current UE on the downlink channel) is adapted for prolonged high data rate transmission, particularly for MBMS transmission. A duration of the data portions sent on the downlink channel is varied possibly up to high duration values (as compared with a duration of one TTI). User equipment enjoying the service is informed of the duration of the imminent available data portion in a field suitably defined and transmitted as control information on the associated control channel(s). Advantageously, during the 'long' decoding of the data portion, the UE does not monitor the associated control channel(s), so that the impact on the terminal's battery is considerably reduced.

A video-communication service in which a separation in different components of the video-communication is caused at the telephone equipment of the users, e.g., a separation in a video and in a voice component. The different components are transmitted on different connections between the telephone equipment of the users. The users have the possibility of selectively dropping any one of the different connections.

A method for managing radio resources in a mobile communications network having a plurality of cells, wherein the radio resources are managed by a plurality of radio resources management procedures arranged for having available at least one maximum downlink total load value representative of the maximum total load level of each cell of the network; and for measuring at least one uplink load value and at least one current downlink total load value of each cell of the network. The method includes the steps of defining at least two status parameters including a first status parameter or load status parameter adapted to reach a first set of status ranges, depending on the measured uplink load value and the current downlink total load value; a second status parameter or packet congestion flag adapted to reach a second set of status ranges, depending upon reaching of a congestion status in a packet management procedure; and adopting different sets of managing strategies associated with the radio resources management procedures of the network as a function of the at least two status parameters being in the respective sets of status ranges. Preferred application is in UMTS mobile networks.

A method for planning a cellular mobile telecommunications network includes at least one network cell and is intended to provide network services to users located in the network cell, wherein the method includes: a) setting a current provisioning rate to the highest of the provisioning rates; b) estimating a power required to the at least one network cell for providing the at least one network service in the service area at the current provisioning rate; c) comparing the estimated required power to a maximum power deliverable by the at least one cell; and, if the estimated required power exceeds the maximum deliverable power; d) reducing the service area so that the estimated power required to the at least one network cell for providing the at least one network service at the current provisioning rate in the reduced service area does not exceed the maximum deliverable power; e) updating the current provisioning rate to the immediately lower provisioning rate of said plurality, if any; and f) repeating steps b) and c) and, if required, steps d) and e).

Method for planning a cellular mobile telecommunications network

To manage the transmission of information packets on channels of a telecommunications network, the packets are organised into user queues received in respective buffers, measuring the occupancy level of the buffers. The users are sorted into respective classes (RT, NRT) identified by the service mode requested. After determining the propagation conditions on the transmission channel respectively associated to said users, the priority in the transmission of the packets is determined, choosing the order in which the respective queues are visited as a function of: &#x2014;a first level priority, linked to whether the users belong to the respective classes of service (RT, NRT), &#x2014;a second level priority, linked to at least a parameter chosen between the level of occupancy of the respective buffer and the propagation conditions of the respective channel.
