A process for preparing a catalyst component made from or containing Mg, Ti, and at least an electron donor compound (ID), including the steps of: (a) reacting a Mg based compound with a Ti compound, having at least a Ti—Cl bond, in an amount such that the Ti/Mg molar ratio is greater than 3 and at a temperature ranging from 0 to 150° C., thereby yielding an intermediate solid catalyst component containing Mg and Ti; and (b) contacting the intermediate solid catalyst component with a gaseous stream containing the electron donor compound (ID) in a gaseous dispersing medium, thereby yielding a final solid catalyst component having an ID/Ti molar ratio ranging from 0.5:1 to 20:1.

Adducts comprising a MgCl, an alcohol ROH in which R is a C1-C10 hydrocarbon group, present in a molar ratio with MgClranging from 0.5 to 5 and less than 15% wt, based on the total weight of the adduct, of a metal salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid having from 8 to 22 carbon atoms.

Adducts are provided comprising MgCl, ethanol and a Lewis base (LB), said compounds being present in molar ratios defined by the following formula MgCl.(EtOH)(LB)in which n is from 2 to 6 and p has values satisfying the following equation p/(n+p)&#x2266;0.1. Solid Lewis adducts comprising MgCl, a Lewis base (LB) belonging to ethers, esters, ketones, silanes or amines and an alcohol ROH, in which R is a C1-C15 hydrocarbon group optionally substituted with heteroatoms containing groups, which compounds are in molar ratios to each other defined by the following formula MgCl(ROH)(LB)in which m ranges from 0.05 to 6, n ranges from 0.08 to 6. The solid Lewis adducts herein can be used to prepare catalysts having good morphological stability, and high polymerization activity.

A MgCl.mEtOH.nHO adducts, where 3.4&#x3c;m&#x2266;4.4, 0&#x2266;n&#x2266;0.7, characterized by an X-ray diffraction spectrum, taken under the condition set forth above, in which, in the range of 2&#x3b8; diffraction angles between 5&#xb0; and 10&#xb0;, at least two diffraction lines are present at diffraction angles 2&#x3b8; of 9.3&#xb1;0.2&#xb0;, and 9.9&#xb1;0.2&#xb0;, the most intense diffraction lines being the one at 2&#x3b8; of 9.3&#xb1;0.2&#xb0;, the intensity of the other diffraction line being less than 0.4 times the intensity of the most intense diffraction line. Catalyst components obtained from the adducts of the present invention are capable to give catalysts for the polymerization of olefins characterized by enhanced activity and/or porosity with respect to the catalysts prepared from the adducts of the prior art.

The present invention relates to an adduct comprising MCl, an alcohol (ROH) in which R is a C1-C10 hydrocarbon group, and a compound containing a transition metal M selected from the Groups 3 to 11 or the lanthanide or actinide groups of the Periodic Table of the Elements (new IUPAC version) in an amount such as to give a weight of M atoms lower than 10% based on the total weight of the adduct. The catalyst components that are obtained by reacting the adducts with halogenating agents show very high specific activity.
