Generalised service detail records are created for a telephony service carried over a packet data network by monitoring packet network service data, signaling data and quality of service data, and combining these data to produce the required service detail records.

Generating service detail records

A method and apparatus are disclosed for determining information about a cellular mobile radio network (such as a GSM network) comprising a fixed part providing radio coverage in a plurality of cells and mobile stations for communicating with the fixed part across a radio interface. Each cell uses a group of control channels which are configured in accordance with configuration messages which are passed in the network when the cell is to be configured or reconfigured. The method comprising the steps of: monitoring signalling messages of a cell which are passed in the network (for example across a GSM Abis interface) generally more frequently than the configuration messages; detecting (S,,S,) monitored messages of predetermined types (such as CHAN RQD, CHAN ACTIV, EST REQ, PAGING CMD, SMSBREQ or SMSBC); and extracting (S,-S,) information from the detected messages relating to the control channel group configuration of the cell.

Determining information about cellular mobile radio networks

A method is disclosed of analyzing lists of neighboring cells in a cellular telecommunications system comprising a plurality of active mobile stations and a static network, the static network having a first cell and a plurality of cells neighboring the first cell, each of the cells having a base station. The method is applicable to GSM and GSM-like systems. In the case of a GSM system, the analyzing method may comprise the steps of: extracting from the static network the GSM MEAS RES produced by the mobile stations in said first cell and producing a reporting list including, for each position in the GSM BA(SACCH) list, the number of times that any of the base station identifiers has been reported for that position; extracting from the static network GSM HANDO CMD messages for handovers from said first cell, and producing a handover list of the GSM BCCHs and corresponding GSM BSICs in the extracted handover messages; correlating the reporting list and the handover list with respect to the BCCHs; and analyzing the correlated lists to determine whether any of the control channels is affected by bad frequency planning.

Analysis of neighbouring cells in cellular telecommunications systems

A method and apparatus are provided for determining information about a cellular mobile radio network comprising a fixed part providing radio coverage in a plurality of cells, and mobile stations for communicating with the fixed part, the network broadcasting to all mobile stations within each cell a frequency allocated to the cell by the network operator and a code allocated to the cell by the network operator. The allocated frequency and code for each cell are determined by monitoring signalling messages passed between network elements, selecting a pair of signalling messages in accordance to predetermined selection criteria, establishing if the pair of messages are related to the same event within the network, and if so, extracting data from the pair of messages. A first embodiment determines the beacon frequency and BSIC of a cell of a GSM type cellular network and associates them with a TRX within the cell. A second embodiment associates the Cell Identity of a cell of a GSM type cellular network with the determined beacon frequency and BSIC.

Network discovery method and apparatus for cellular mobile radio networks

A method and apparatus are provided for monitoring a cellular mobile radio system and for identifying monitored radio elements within the network with respect to other network entities. The logical and physical topology of a cellular mobile radio system is determined by monitoring messages passed across a communications interface in the system. Embodiments of the invention associate common information occurring in different messages, and over time, establish the topology of a network, even though messages passed across the monitored interface do not comprise unique system-wide addressing information. In particular, the present method provides a mapping between radio elements (TRX) and other network entities (TEI, CI, and LAI) in a GSM type cellular system by monitoring messages across the Abis and A interfaces.
