A graphite electrode exhibits oxidation resistance by modifying the outer radial surface characteristics. The outer radial surface may be modified by providing a textured portion which improves water flow while minimizing water absorbtion. Alternately, a layer of flexible graphite or plurality of particles of exfoliated graphite may be disposed on the outer radial surface of the electrode body.

A substrate useful for the formation of, inter alia, a flow field plate for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell, the substrate formed of at least one resin-impregnated sheet of compressed particles of exfoliated graphite comprising two major surfaces, the substrate having an active area with flow field channels thereon, the sheet of compressed particles of exfoliated graphite having a local web thickness in at least about 50% of its active area that is no more than about 55% greater than the minimum web thickness of the active area of the substrate.

An isolated thermal interface is presented. The inventive interface includes a flexible graphite sheet having two major surfaces, at least one of the major surfaces coated with a protective coating sufficient to inhibit flaking of the particles of graphite.

An optimized design for a composite heat sink is provided utilizing a high thermal conducting base and low thermal conducting fins. The base preferably is constructed from anisotropic graphite material, and the fins are preferably constructed from a thermally conductive plastic material. In the case of a low profile heat sink having a fin height of no greater than about 3 times that of the base, the composite construction provides superior cooling yet lighter weight as compared to a conventional all-aluminum heat sink of the same dimensions.

The invention relates to expanded graphite and methods of making the graphite and products that can be made from the graphite made from the inventive process. The invention includes the step of introducing a fluid into at least one of a plurality of interstices of graphite flake, wherein the fluid comprises at least one of a sub-critical point fluid, a near critical point fluid, or a supercritical fluid. The graphite flake is also intercalated with an intercalant and optionally an oxidizing agent. The invention may further include novel techniques of exfoliating the graphite. The invention may be practiced to make nano-sized graphite particles and also graphite composites. Preferred composites which may be made in accordance with the invention include conductive polymeric composites (thermally or electrically), paint composites, battery composites, capacitor composites, and pollution abatement catalyst support composites.

Graphite intercalation and exfoliation process

The invention may be practiced to make graphite composites. Preferred composites which may be made in accordance with the invention include conductive polymeric composites (thermally or electrically), paint composites, battery composites, capacitor composites, and pollution abatement catalyst support composites. One method of making the graphite aforementioned composites includes introducing an intercalant into at least one interstice of at least one flake of natural graphite. The method also includes introducing a fluid into the at least one interstices of the flake. Preferably, the fluid comprises at least one of a sub-critical fluid, near critical point fluid, or a supercritical fluid. Furthermore the method includes blending the flake with a polymer, thereby forming a graphite-polymeric composite.

Graphite composites and methods of making such composites

A thermal management system provides a heat dissipating component using a high thermal conductivity insert. The heat dissipating component may be a spreader or heat sink, and includes a planar graphite member having high thermal conductivity along the plane of the member and having a relatively low thermal conductivity through the thickness of the member. A cavity is formed through the thickness of the member and the high conductivity insert is received in the cavity. The insert may be an isotropic high thermal conductivity material such as copper or an anisotropic material such as graphite oriented to have high conductivity in the direction of the thickness of the planar element.

Heat dissipating component using high conducting inserts

A thermal interface and a thermal interface as part of a thermal management system that comprises a heat source, and a cooling module. The heat source has an external surface; the thermal interface is a flexible graphite sheet article having two parallel planar surfaces, with the first planar surface of the thermal interface being in operative contact with the external surface of the heat source and the second planar surface being in contact with the cooling module. The graphite sheet contains oil.

Thermal interface material

A method of manufacturing material suitable for the construction of a component of a fuel cell, such as a flow field plate or electrode. Uncured resin impregnated flexible graphite sheet is ground into particles. Without re-expanding the particles, and without adding further resin to the particles, the particles are molded into the form of the desired material. The material is then cured. Additives may be mixed with the particles to improve the properties of the material.

Molding of materials from graphite particles

An anode for a lithium-ion battery is presented as well as a process for producing an anode for a lithium-ion battery. The anode is formed from a generally continuous sheet of particles of exfoliated graphite having a thickness of no more than about 350 microns, itself or in a laminate with a metallic substrate. The process involves laminating particles of exfoliated graphite to a metallic substrate, such that the particles of exfoliated graphite form a generally continuous sheet of graphite having a thickness of no more than about 350 microns. The inventive anode reduces or eliminates capacity fading due to contact loss and has superior permeability to lithium.

Anode for lithium-ion battery

An electrode for an electrochemical fuel cell is provided. More particularly, an electrode formed of a sheet of a compressed mass of expanded graphite particles having a plurality of transverse fluid channels passing through the sheet between first and second opposed surfaces of the sheet, is provided. The size, shape and/or placement of the channels, and/or the density of the sheet, is engineered so as to reduce or minimize flooding in the fuel cell.

Flooding-reducing fuel cell electrode

A composite I-beam is presented. The inventive I-beam includes a first flange and a second flange, with a web extending between the first and second flanges. At least one of the flanges of the inventive I-beam has a reinforcing layer of a supporting material thereon or therein.
