An information handling system includes a processor that provides a USB-2 channel and a USB-3 channel to a device. The device provides the USB-2 and -3 channels to selected ports. Each port includes a USB-3 enable setting. When the USB-3 enable setting for each particular USB port is in a first state, the associated device USB-3 channel is active, and when the USB-3 enable setting for each particular USB port is in a second state, the associated device USB-3 channel is inactive. The USB-3 enable setting for at least one of the USB ports is placed into the second state to reduce electromagnetic interference between the associated USB-3 channel and an antenna.

An information handling system may include a plurality of information handling resources and a power subsystem for providing electrical energy to the plurality of information handling resources, the power subsystem comprising a source of electrical energy for supplying a supply voltage to an electrical node, a first set of one or more voltage regulators, and a diode coupled at its anode to the electrical node and coupled at its cathode to respective inputs of each of the first set of one or more voltage regulators in order to isolate capacitances associated with the inputs of the first set of one or more voltage regulators from the electrical node.

In some embodiments, an IHS may comprise a motherboard including a Central Processing Unit (CPU); a cooling system coupled to the motherboard, the cooling system including a heat pipe, the CPU coupled to a first side of the heat pipe; and a daughterboard coupled to the motherboard and including a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) coupled to a second side of the heat pipe. In other embodiments, a method may include providing a motherboard including a CPU; coupling a cooling system to the motherboard, the cooling system including a heat pipe, the CPU coupled to a first side of the heat pipe; and coupling a daughterboard to the motherboard, the daughterboard including a GPU coupled to a second side of the heat pipe.

In one form the disclosure, a PCB can include a first multiple-layered capacitor including a first orientation and placed along a surface operable to mount electronic components. The PCB can also include a second multiple-layered capacitor including a second orientation different from the first. The second multiple-layered capacitor can be placed along the surface near the first multiple-layered capacitor.

Audible noise related to power state transitions of an information handling system processing component, such as the central processing unit, is reduced by randomizing the time between power state transitions. Random power state transitions are managed by an operating system module that tracks the transitions and selects random times for subsequent transitions within a predetermined time range. Alternatively, an arbitrating circuit intercepts power state transition commands and arbitrates their communication at random times. Random power state transitions reduces audible noise by spreading the frequency of the noise-causing power transition events over a wider band.

An information handling system (IHS) employs a power fault protection circuit to protect the IHS from overvoltages which may occur on an information line from a power adapter to the IHS. The system includes a processor coupled to the protection circuit. The circuit is operative in a first mode to decouple an information line from the IHS in response to a disable command and operative in a second mode to decouple the information line from the IHS when a voltage in the information line exceeds a predetermined threshold voltage.

A portable information handling system (IHS) includes an external module which derives its power from the internal unregulated DC power rail of the IHS. An IHS power subsystem includes a multiple threshold current protection circuit which continuously monitors power usage by the external module. The multiple threshold current limit protection circuit dynamically adjusts the current limit depending on whether the IHS is powered by an AC source or a DC battery source.

A sensing apparatus for detecting a disconnection in a connector for interfacing a component module in a computer system. A first portion of the connector is coupled to the computer system and a second portion of the connector is coupled to a component module in the computer system. The connector portions include electrically conductive portions that mate to enable communication and/or transmission of power signals between the component module and the computer system. One or more sense signals are applied to a predetermined number of electrically conductive portions on the first portion of the connector. A set of corresponding electrically conductive portions on the second portion of the connector are connected to ground. When the connector portions properly mated, the sense signals applied to the first portion of the connector are pulled to ground. A logic circuit provides an output signal indicative of whether the sense signals are pulled to ground on the corresponding set of electrically conductive portions on the first portion of the connector. If the sense signals are pulled to ground, then the logic circuit allows power to be supplied to the component module. When the sense signals are not pulled to ground on any one or more of the corresponding electrically conductive portions on the first portion of the connector, the logic circuit prevents power from being applied to the component module. The circuit will also remove power from the component module if the connector becomes disconnected to the point where the sense signals are not pulled to ground. The output of the logic circuit may also be used to provide an indication to the user that there is a disconnection in the particular connector.
