A method of securely transferring user data from a first communication device to a second communication device includes receiving with the first device a public encryption key transmitted by the second device over a first communication medium using a first communication protocol. The user data is encrypted with the first device using the received public key. The encrypted user data is transmitted from the first device to the second device over a second communication medium using a second communication protocol.

A media detection system includes a sensor and a flag. The flag is pivotally supported proximate to a media path through which media is moved. The flag pivots as media is moved through the media path such that the flag interacts with the sensor to cause the sensor to alternate between two states and to produce at least four signals representing positioning of the media along the path. The flag is configured to remain substantially in one angular position for a portion of time while the medium is moving and in contact with the flag.

Media detection

A method for automatic removal of vertical streaks involves a comparison between image data for a pixel and its neighbor pixels to determine whether the pixel is non-homogenous. In a preferred method, the comparison employs an adaptive threshold against which a difference between the pixel and its neighbor pixels is compared, with the adaptive threshold taking into account accumulative information pertaining to pixels generated by a common optical sensor element. A preferred method also includes the step of considering locations of non-homogenous pixels in the image to determine whether the image data associated with the non-homogenous pixels needs to be changed or modified. A preferred method also includes the step of associating the non-homogenous pixels with different image data.

Method for automatic removal of vertical streaks by modifying image data associated with non-homogenous image elements

A method for automatic prevention of vertical streaks involves processing output signals from a plurality of photosites to determine what gain is appropriate for each output signal. An exemplary preferred method distinguishes between different types of output signals for which a first type of gain is appropriate and other output signals for which a second type of gain is appropriate. The first type of gain is a proportionate gain. The second type of gain is determined from at least one gain which is appropriate for output signals generated by neighbor photosites. The second type of gain is applied to the output signals when the processing indicates that a light-absorbing optical obstruction associated with the photosites generating the output signals appears to be positioned in an optical path of the photosites on or between a scan surface area over which an object to be imaged by the photosites is positioned and a calibration strip facing the scan area surface.
