A channel sounding scheme is presented herein that relies on a combination of a first channel sounding procedure and a second channel sounding procedure. The first channel sounding technique is one that involves an exchange of dedicated channel sounding related signals to determine channel conditions between the first wireless communication device and the particular second wireless communication device. The second channel sounding technique is one in which channel conditions are implicitly discovered from any signals transmitted by the particular second wireless communication device to the first wireless communication device. A first wireless communication device computes updates to steering matrix information used for beamforming one or more signal streams to a particular second wireless communication device based on a combination of the first channel sounding technique and the second channel sounding technique.

Explicit and implicit hybrid beamforming channel sounding

A method and apparatus are provided for managing radio access point (RAP) devices and enterprise controller devices in a wireless communication network. An enterprise controller device registers with a gateway device, and the enterprise controller device receives a registration request from multiple RAP devices that are serviced by the enterprise controller device. As the RAP devices register with the enterprise controller device, the enterprise controller device generates a list of the RAP devices registered with the enterprise controller. As the enterprise controller receives additional registration requests from additional RAP devices, the enterprise controller updates the list. The enterprise controller sends the list to the gateway device with which it registers so that the gateway device is aware of RAP devices serviced by the enterprise controller device. In this way, aggregated messages may be sent from the gateway device to the enterprise controller.

Multicast optimization and aggregation in an enterprise controller

Techniques are provided for transmitting and receiving communications on behalf of wireless user equipment devices between a plurality of radio access point (RAP) devices and a gateway apparatus through a controller apparatus. A controller apparatus generates a plurality of first identifiers used for communications on behalf of corresponding wireless user devices between the controller apparatus and respective RAPs. Each first identifier identifies a wireless user device and a RAP to which the wireless user device is associated. The controller apparatus maps each first identifier to a corresponding one of a plurality of second identifiers for communications exchanged on behalf of the wireless user devices between the controller apparatus and a gateway apparatus in the wireless cellular communication network. The controller apparatus remaps a new first identifier to an existing second identifier when a particular wireless user device has handed over from a first RAP to a second RAP.

Enterprise controller handover management of wireless user devices between radio access point devices

Techniques are provided herein to segment subcarriers for broadcast transmission to one or more mobile stations. A broadcast message to be transmitted from a first device is generated. The broadcast message comprises a plurality of symbols and each symbol is to be transmitted at a different one of a plurality of frequency subcarriers. The plurality of subcarriers is divided into groups and each group of subcarriers is assigned to a corresponding one of a plurality of antennas of the first device. The groups of subcarriers are transmitted from corresponding ones of the plurality of antennas.

Segmented transmission for broadcast messages using multiple antennas

A dynamically adaptive channel estimation process is provided for use in a wireless communication device. At a first device, a wireless transmission is received from a second device. The transmission comprises a plurality of successive symbols each of which comprises a plurality of subcarriers. The first device is configured to compute channel characterizing information for a wireless channel between the first device and the second device based on the received values at subcarriers of the successive symbols. The first device is configured to select one of a plurality of channel estimation schemes based on the channel characterizing information, and to compute an estimate of channel information for the wireless channel using the selected one of the plurality of channel estimation schemes.

Dynamic channel estimation based on channel conditions

Techniques are provided to pre-distort a signal that is transmitted by a transmitter of a wireless communication device, e.g., a device configured for wireless radio frequency communication. The transmitter of the device inherently introduces distortion to the baseband signal to be transmitted. In at least one frame of a baseband signal to be transmitted, at least one subcarrier in a preamble of the frame is shifted in frequency such that the at least one subcarrier is offset from a normal subcarrier frequency position. The at least one frame of the baseband signal is supplied to the transmitter that is configured to produce a transmit signal for transmission. The transmit signal at an output of the transmitter is sampled or detected and inter-modulation distortion in the transmit signal is determined at one or more frequencies as a result of shifting of the frequency of the at least one subcarrier in the preamble of the at least one frame. The baseband signal is pre-distorted based on the inter-modulation distortion prior to coupling to the transmitter for transmission.

The system comprises a base station control device (BCD) for configuring one or more parameters for operating one or more base stations (BSs), a first BS covering a first cell having one or more mobile terminals therein, a second BS covering a second cell neighboring to the first cell and sharing a predetermined frequency band with the first cell, wherein one or more radio frames constructed for communications between the first BS and any mobile terminal of the first cell and one or more radio frames constructed for communications between the second BS and any mobile terminal of the second cell are distinguishable by defining different channel configuration sets having one or more operation parameters, wherein the parameters includes a training sequence, a spreading code, and a channel observation window position.

The method comprises broadcasting a predetermined number of preambles through beamforming from a base station, detecting, by a subscriber station, a predetermined frame associated with one selected preamble that has the highest power level, and identifying one or more subcarriers for carrying control information through the selected preamble.

A method for determining timing positions in a wireless communications system comprises creating a time-domain timing detection window from a preamble of a receiving signal, generating a first vector of correlations between sampling points in the time-domain timing detection window and sampling points of a known preamble, identifying a pivot position from the largest correlation value of the first vector and generating second vectors based on the pivot position, generating a third vector comprising the largest elements of the second vectors; generating a fourth vector comprising sums of elements in the second vectors, generating fifth and sixth vectors comprising a sum of subsets of the third and fourth vectors, respectively, calculating a seventh vector using the fifth and sixth vectors according to a predetermined equation, and selecting an index of one element from the fifth and seventh vectors to be the timing position according to a predetermined rule.

An apparatus for detecting uplink ranging codes includes a first transform unit for transforming data received from a mobile station to generate first outputs; a cross-correlation unit for comparing the first outputs with possible ranging codes to generate second outputs; a screening unit for selectively passing the second outputs representing parts of the received data that match the possible ranging codes; a second transform unit for transforming the second outputs from the screening unit to generate third outputs; and a detection unit for detecting the ranging codes for the received data based on the third outputs.

The present invention discloses a low-complexity estimation method for obtaining a weighting vector for an antenna system with adaptive phased arrays. A first matrix is generated from a plurality of statistically independent symbols of the receiving signals. The plurality of statistically independent symbols is received from two or more antennas over some period of time without a prior knowledge of the properties of the symbols. A second matrix, which is the covariance matrix of the first matrix, is calculated. Subsequently, a column or row is selected from the second matrix to be the weighting vector for two or more antennas in an adaptive phased array antenna system.

Method for estimating a weighting vector for an adaptive phased array antenna system

A code division multiple access time division duplex communication system having an adaptive antenna array station communicates beamformed orthogonal code channels to a remote station. The remote station determines the amplitude and phase components of the received code channels and communicates the information back to the adaptive antenna array station which uses the information plus the beamform of the received signal in an adaptive antenna array station calibration process. By varying one of the beamforms received by the remote station, sufficient data points may be gathered to facilitate accurate calibration. The calibration procedure may be performed while voice or other digital information is communicated between the remote station and the adaptive antenna array station.

A communication system having an adaptive antenna array subsystem generates calibration information for the adaptive array subsystem by measuring the amplitude and phase of modulated signals within the subsystem at the antenna array mount and at the back plane mount for the transmit and receive array. The calibration information is used to more accurately perform beamforming for both received an transmitted information signals. The communication system uses a time diversity duplex (TDD) synchronous code division multiple access (SCDMA) protocol for wireless communication between remote terminals and a base station. The calibration means uses a combination combiner and splitter having matched micro strip lines incorporated into a printed circuit board in either the antenna array mount or the back plane.
