Various methods are provided for metathesizing a feedstock. In one aspect, a method includes providing a feedstock including a natural oil, chemically treating the feedstock under conditions sufficient to diminish catalyst poisons in the feedstock, and, following the treating, combining a metathesis catalyst with the feedstock under conditions sufficient to metathesize the feedstock.

Chemical methods for treating a metathesis feedstock

Described are morphology stable wax compositions comprising the (trans)esterification product of a wax-forming composition comprising: (a) a triglyceride stock, a fatty acid stock, or a mixture thereof; and (b) a glycerol-based composition comprising glycerol, polyglycerol, or a mixture thereof. Methods of making the waxes are also described. The wax compositions may be used in candles, stack waxes, jell candles, cosmetics, food coatings, adhesives, board manufacturing (e.g., particle board and oriented strand board), urethane foams or coatings, alkyd coatings, coating formulation additives, printing additives, polymer processing agents, extrusion processing aids, polymer plasticizers, mold releases, polishes, and stick markers.

Wax compositions and methods of preparing wax compositions

Various methods are provided for metathesizing a feedstock. In one aspect, a method includes providing a feedstock comprising a natural oil, chemically treating the feedstock under conditions sufficient to diminish catalyst poisons in the feedstock, and, following the treating, combining a metathesis catalyst with the feedstock under conditions sufficient to metathesize the feedstock.

Transesterification systems and methods for producing methyl ester are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method for producing methyl ester includes introducing a first charge into a reactor. The first charge contains a triglyceride-containing fat and an alcohol. The method can also include performing a first transesterification reaction in which the triglyceride-containing fat is reacted with the alcohol to produce a first product. The method can further include settling the first product into a methyl ester-containing layer and a glycerol-containing layer, decanting the glycerol-containing layer after settling from the reactor, mixing a second charge with the first product, and performing a second transesterification reaction after mixing the second charge with the first product.

Process for producing methyl esters

Applicant has discovered processes for preparing polyglycerols and polyglycerol esters in high yield and with minimal formation of cyclic polyglycerols and cyclic polyglycerol esters. Furthermore, the processes of this invention produce a high proportion of linear polyglycerols and polyglycerol esters. The linear polyglycerols have very desirable physical characteristics, including a clear appearance at melt, a desirable Gardner color, a mild odor, and a bland taste. The polyglycerols and polyglycerol esters prepared by the method of the present invention are well suited for use as cosmetic and food additives. Since few, if any, cyclic polyglycerols and polyglycerol esters are formed by the processes of this invention, costly and time consuming distillation steps to remove such by-products are not needed. More specifically, applicants have discovered that if a calcium containing compound, such as calcium hydroxide, is used in place of potassium or sodium hydroxide during polymerization of glycerol, polyglycerol, or a mixture thereof or esterification of polyglycerols, the formation of cyclic polyglycerols is greatly reduced. One embodiment of the invention is a method of preparing a polyglycerol comprising polymerizing glycerol, polyglycerol, or a mixture thereof in the presence of a calcium containing compound, such as calcium hydroxide. Preferably, the calcium containing compound is present in a catalytically effective amount. Another embodiment is a method of preparing a polyglycerol ester by esterifying a polyglycerol in the presence of a calcium containing compound.

Processes for preparing linear polyglycerols and polyglycerol esters

The inventors have discovered that partially halogenated hydantoins exhibit superior antimicrobial efficacy and decreased performance additive decomposition rates than fully halogenated hydantoins, such as dichlorodimethyl hydantoin (DCDMH). Partially halogenated hydantoins are solutions containing monochlorohydantoin and, optionally, dihalogenated hydantoin or non-halogenated hydantoin. The present invention is a method of reducing slime in a circulating water slurry comprising organic matter and one or more performance additives, such as optical brighteners, while minimizing decomposition of the performance additives. The method comprises adding one or more partially halogenated hydantoins, such as Cl -chlorodimethyl hydantoin, to the slurry. The concentration of partially halogenated hydantoin maintained in the slurry generally ranges from about 0.01 to about 50 ppm (expressed as Cl ). This method is particularly useful for circulating water slurries in paper processing.

The subject invention relates to a novel class of compounds, known as alkali metal salts of hydroxyalkyl sulfonates of aminoalkyl alkanol amines and/or aminoalkyl alkanol ethers, the methods of making such compounds, the alkali-stable solutions containing such compounds, and the use of said solutions as strong detergent compositions. Those alkali-stable solutions are temperature-stable, exhibit superior wetting characteristics, and can be made into low or high foam formulations useful for hard surface cleaning, oven and grill cleaning, metal cleaning, bottle washing, steam cleaning and wax stripping formulations.

A method for producing amphocarboxylpropionate comprising initiating the reaction of methyl acrylate with 2-alkyl imidazoline in the substantial absence of water; adding from 0.3 to 2 moles of water per mole of 2-alkyl imidazoline to the reaction products after at least 1.3 moles of the methyl acrylate reacts with one mole of the 2-alkyl imidazoline, so as to form a reaction product having a molar ratio of at least 1.8:1 of methyl acrylate to imidazoline. The products of the method can be formulated in highly concentrated form and do not have the gelling problems of the prior art formulation. These products are useful and beneficial in personal care products.
