The present invention relates generally to a protective wrap and a protective envelope or pouch made therefrom, as well as the apparatus and process for forming such wraps and envelopes. Water-based heat-expandable adhesives (WBHEA) which include a plurality of heat-expandable microspheres are disposed in a pattern between web substrates on a continuous, high speed manufacturing line to produce padded, insulated products useful as envelopes, mailers and other protective packaging.

The adhesive composition comprising emulsion polymers and microspheres and articles made therefrom are provided. The adhesive is particularly suitable for packages for consumer products that provide sufficient strength and thermal insulation while reducing the overall basis weight of the substrates.

An adhesive composition that improves structural integrity and insulative properties when applied to a cellulosic substrate is provided. The adhesive composition includes a plurality of microspheres and an emulsion-based polymer that has (i) an elastic modulus greater than 0.5 MPa in the range temperature range of 70&#xb0; C. to 110&#xb0; C.; (ii) an absolute log(E)/T slope of less than 0.05 in the range temperature range of 70&#xb0; C. to 110&#xb0; C.; and (iii) a tan d value less than 0.6 at 90&#xb0; C.

An adhesive composition that provides improved structural integrity and insulative properties when applied to a substrate is provided. The adhesive composition includes an emulsion-based polymer, a plurality of microspheres; and optionally, water and plasticizer.

Adhesive having structural integrity and insulative properties

The present invention is directed to impact resistant and/or thermally insulative coating compositions for protective packages. Particularly, the protective packages include envelopes, pillows and Gusseted bags that house fragile and/or perishable objects during transport or mailing. The coating composition, upon heat or radiation trigger, expands at least 2500% in volume. The protective packages coated with the coating composition provide impact resistance, high strength, thermal insulation and light-weighting.
