A spray coating apparatus that applies a coating material onto outer surfaces of glass objects includes a coating material source that includes a coating material. A spray nozzle assembly includes a spray nozzle fluidly connected to the coating material source. The spray nozzle is arranged and configured to direct the coating material in a first direction toward the glass object and provide an overspray amount of the coating material by the glass object such that the overspray amount bypasses a non-line of sight area of the glass object. A turn nozzle assembly includes a turn nozzle fluidly connected to a pressurized gas source. The turn nozzle is arranged and configured to direct pressurized gas in a second direction different than the first direction toward the non-line of sight area of the glass package to redirect the coating material onto the non-line of sight area.

Spray coating apparatuses with turn nozzle assemblies and methods of coating glass objects

A method includes impregnating a region of a glass sheet with a filler material in a liquid state. The glass sheet includes a plurality of glass soot particles. The filler material is solidified subsequent to the impregnating step to form a glass/filler composite region of the glass sheet.

A glass tube manufacturing apparatus for manufacturing glass tubing includes a glass delivery tank with molten glass. The glass delivery tank has a bottom opening. A bell has an upper portion with an outer diameter located at the bottom opening. A heating apparatus is at least partially disposed around the bell. The heating apparatus includes a heated portion and a muffle portion located below the heated portion. A lower extended muffle structure extends downwardly from the muffle portion. The lower extended muffle structure extending about the glass tubing on all sides to manage convective airflow therethrough.

Method and apparatus for controlling glass tube taper

A glass container including a body having a delamination factor less than or equal to 10 and at least one marking is described. The body has an inner surface, an outer surface, and a wall thickness extending between the outer surface and the inner surface. The marking is located within the wall thickness. In particular, the marking is a portion of the body having a refractive index that differs from a refractive index of an unmarked portion of the body. Methods of forming the marking within the body are also described.

Anti-counterfeiting measures for glass articles

A system and method for sintering a thin, high purity fused silica glass sheet having a thickness of 500 &#x3bc;m or less, includes a step of rastering a beam of a laser across a sheet of high purity fused silica soot; wherein a pattern of the rastering includes tightly spacing target locations on the sheet such that the laser sinters the soot and simultaneously forms tiny notches on a first major surface of the sheet when viewed in cross-section, wherein the tiny notches are crenellated such that at least some of the notches have generally flat bottom surfaces and at least some respective adjoining caps have generally plateau top surfaces offset from the bottom surfaces by steeply-angled sidewalls.

Laser waveguides, methods and systems for forming a laser waveguide are provided. The waveguide includes an inner cladding layer surrounding a central axis and a glass core surrounding and located outside of the inner cladding layer. The glass core includes a laser-active material. The waveguide includes an outer cladding layer surrounding and located outside of the glass core. The inner cladding, outer cladding and/or core may surround a hollow central channel or bore and may be annular in shape.

A system and process for making a thin, soot particle or glass sheet is provided. The system includes a soot deposition plate having a deposition surface and a glass soot generating device spaced from the deposition surface along a first axis. The glass soot generating device is configured to generate glass soot particles and to deliver the glass soot particles through an outlet and on to the deposition surface in a layer having a thickness of less than 5 mm. At least one of the soot deposition plate and the glass soot generating device is movable to cause relative movement between the deposition surface of the soot deposition plate and the glass soot generating device. A thin soot or sintered soot sheet is also provided. The soot sheet has a variable surface topography that varies along at least two axes.

Silica-containing sheet and related system and methods

Methods for manufacturing cables and cables assemblies include providing powder particles within a tube extruded about optical fiber. The particles may be accelerated so that as they strike the tube and mechanically attach to the tube.
