A housing for positioning a discrete optoelectronic emitter and a discrete optoelectronic sensor to function as a coupler. The same housing provides the option for either reflective or transmissive mode operation. The discrete devices are removable to permit substitutions of devices having differing characteristics.

Optoelectronic coupler housing

An improved electronic watch module easily manufactured and easily repaired has a housing lower half containing at least one watch integrated circuit electrically connected to a quartz crystal and a potential source. A switch in the housing lower half is used for operating the watch, i.e., for setting the time as well as providing minutes and seconds on demand rather than hours and minutes normally displayed. A housing upper half contains a liquid crystal display element and means for electrically interconnecting the display element and the at least one watch integrated circuit in the housing lower half. Releasable means fastens the housing lower and upper halves in assembled relationship. The upper and lower housing halves may be separately assembled and tested to insure proper operation prior to fastening them together.

Liquid crystal watch module

In an electronic watch having a body of substantially reduced thickness obtained by having portions of the top surface of the watch extend above the remainder of the top surface, a liquid crystal or other passive display extends into one of the portions of the top surface extending above the remainder of the top surface. In addition to having the top surface of this portion substantially transparent, side walls of the portion are also substantially transparent in order to allow light to enter the display from the sides of the portion as well as its top. The sides may be shaped to concentrate light entering them on the display. Additional light entering the display from the sides of the raised portion enhances visibility of the display substantially, particularly in dim light conditions.
