A control valve that forms part of a cooling circuit comprising a first branch which contains a radiator and a second branch that constitutes a bypass of a radiator, and its method of use, are described. When used in a motor vehicle combustion engine cooling circuit, the control valve has a third branch and has at least one unit heater for heating the vehicle cabin.

A control valve suitable for forming part of a cooling circuit comprising a first branch which contains a radiator and a second branch that constitutes a bypass of a radiator is described. The control valve has a third branch, which, in a motor vehicle combustion engine cooling circuit, has at least one unit heater for heating the vehicle cabin.

Two stop valves, associated with bypass ducts containing energy absorbing devices, enable an adjustable fraction of the hot fluid to be diverted past left and right hand heating radiators, so that any change in the adjustment of the fluid flow in either of the radiators has no effect on the fluid flow in the other radiator.

A heating, ventilating and/or air conditioning apparatus includes an air heating duct containing a primary radiator of the hot fluid flow type and an electric auxiliary radiator, a stream of air being passed through both radiators. It also includes a signal processing module for governing operation of the apparatus in accordance with atmospheric parameters set by a user, and a temperature sensor for measuring the temperature of the fluid flowing in the primary radiator. The signal processing means include a regulating module which is arranged to make a selective decision as whether to energise the auxiliary radiator, and if so, to what extent, in accordance with the parameters set by the user and at least the measured temperature of the fluid in the primary radiator.
