Aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to catalyst compositions including metal chalcogenides, processes for producing such catalyst compositions, processes for enhancing catalytic active sites in such catalyst compositions, and uses of such catalyst compositions in, e.g., processes for producing conversion products. In an aspect, a process for forming a catalyst composition is provided. The process includes introducing an electrolyte material and an amphiphile material to a metal chalcogenide to form the catalyst composition. In another aspect, a catalyst composition is provided. The catalyst composition includes a metal chalcogenide, an electrolyte material, and an amphiphile material. Devices for hydrogen evolution reaction are also provided.

Methods and systems for electrochemically producing at least one product are disclosed. In some embodiments, the systems include a membraneless electrochemical flow-through reactor. A pair of porous electrodes configured at an angle to each other is disposed within the reactor in a channel of flowing electrolyte including a target reactant. As the electrolyte stream flows through the porous electrodes, a voltage is applied across the electrodes, resulting in the generation of a catholyte effluent stream and an anolyte effluent stream Gaseous and/or liquid products may then be separated from these streams. The membraneless electrochemical flow-through reactor is an easy to design and assemble apparatus for a variety of electrochemical processes.

The system is configured for performing scanning electrochemical microscopy via non-local continuous line probes. The continuous line probes include an insulating probe substrate, an insulating layer, and a conductive band electrode. The system includes a sample stage for positioning a sample substrate to be imaged so as to enable contact with the insulting probe substrate at an angle &#x398;. The continuous line probe is translated across the sample substrate and changes in the signal generated at the continuous line probe are identified to indicate the presence of features on the sample substrate. A plurality of scans are performed at different angles via rotating the sample stage or the continuous line probe, the results of which are combined and analyzed to produce an image of the sample substrate via compressed sensing reconstruction. The resulting image has comparable resolution to those produced via conventional scanning electrochemical microscopy processes, but in less scan time and with less complex scanning hardware.
