The present invention is a process for separating acid gas from gaseous mixtures containing acid gas and at least one non-acid gas. The process comprises bringing the gas stream into contact with a multilayer composite membrane comprising a non-selective polymeric support layer and a separating layer comprising a blend of a water soluble polymer and one-half equivalent or more of an acid gas reactive salt based upon the repeating unit of the water soluble polymer, the acid gas reactive salt which is formed from a monovalent cation and an anion for which the pK,of the conjugate acid is greater than 3, wherein the multilayer composite membrane separates the acid gas from the gaseous mixture by selectively permeating the acid gas.

Process for separating acid gases from gaseous mixtures utilizing composite membranes formed from salt-polymer blends

Acid gases are separated from a gas stream by bringing the gas stream into contact with a multilayer composite membrane comprising a nonselective polymeric support layer and an active separating layer comprising a polyelectrolyte polymer which contains cationic groups which are electrostatically associated with anions for which the pK.sub.a of the conjugate acid is greater than 3.

Polyelectrolyte membranes for the separation of acid gases

The present invention is a modified polymeric membrane having improved selectivity for separating gas mixtures. The membrane comprises a silyl substituted polyacetylene polymer to which has been added 5 to 50 wt. % of an additive which is miscible with the polymer, has a boiling point &gt;300.degree. C. at atmospheric pressure, is soluble in a common solvent for the polymer and increases the selectivity ratio of O.sub.2 /N.sub.2 by at least 15% over the polymer without the additive.

The present invention is a process for separating ammonia from mixtures of other gases or from aqueous streams. The ammonia-containing mixture is contacted with a membrane containing, as the active component, a salt having the structural formula: NR.sub.4.sup.+ X.sup.-, wherein each R is independently H or a straight chain or branched alkyl group and X.sup.- is an organic or inorganic anion. The membrane is useful for the selective permeation of ammonia from mixtures of gases containing ammonia, nitrogen and hydrogen.

The process comprises passing the gas mixture over a membrane, which is selectively permeable to the component being separated, due to one or more reversible reactions between the component desired to be separated and a layer of active molten material immobilized in a suitable support material and/or encapsulated in a non-porous gas permeable polymer material.

Method for gas separation

The present invention is a process for separating ammonia from mixtures of other gases or from aqueous streams. The ammonia containing mixture is contacted with an anion exchange polymer cast into membrane form, which selectively permeates NH.sub.3 thereby providing a separation from the other components in the mixture. Alternatively, ammonia recovery may be achieved by employing the said anion exchange polymer as a selective, reversible NH.sub.3 sorbent.
