The present invention provides a drive shaft for a bipolar surgical instrument, the drive shaft comprising an elongate body defining a first axis, and having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, the elongate body comprising: a first portion defining a first open channel extending along a portion of the length of the elongate body; and a second portion distinct from the first portion, the second portion defining a second open channel extending along a portion of the length of the elongate body, wherein both the first and second portions are aligned with one another and extend parallel to the first axis, and wherein the first portion is spaced apart from the second portion so as to define a recessed blade track therebetween, the recessed blade track extending parallel to the first axis. The present invention further provides a bipolar surgical instrument incorporating such a drive shaft.

Drive shaft for a surgical instrument

An improved drive shaft for controlling an end effector of surgical instrument having advantages over the prior art, specifically, the drive shaft includes two separate elongate elements, each including a flange at its proximal end for restricting the lateral movement of the drive shaft when installed within an outer shaft of the instrument. The dimensions of the flanges are such that they fit within the outer shaft with minimal clearance. This allows the drive shaft to be moved longitudinally within the outer shaft to actuate an end effector whilst minimizing any lateral movement. This consequently prevents the end effector from tilting as it is actuated. The drive members are arranged so that the flanges extend in opposite directions perpendicular to the length of the drive shaft. This helps to improve ease of assembly and provides space within the outer shaft for features such as connection wires and the like.

A plug comprising: a plurality of pins or a plurality of sockets; a body portion housing the plurality of pins or the plurality of sockets and the body portion extending parallel to a longitudinal axis of the plurality of pins or the plurality of sockets; a connection section connected to the body portion and extending from the body portion at an obtuse angle; and a cord connected to an end of the connection section; wherein the body portion and the connection section are connected at a joint and the joint includes a sub-flush radius on an underside of the joint.

Gravity plug and connector

A jaw member for an electrosurgical instrument is manufactured by providing a jaw housing () having a longitudinal jaw section (), and an electrically conductive plate () including one or more passages () therein. The electrically conductive plate is disposed on the jaw section of the jaw housing, and placed into a mold (). A flowable insulating material () is injected into the mold to secure the electrically conductive plate to the jaw housing, such that the flowable material () flows through the one or more passages () to form one or more stop members () that project a predetermined distance from the electrically conductive plate.

Manufacturing electrosurgical instruments

An end effector for an electrosurgical instrument includes a pair of opposing first and second jaw members movable between an open position in which the jaw members are disposed in a spaced relation relative to one another, and a closed position in which the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. A first sealing electrode is located on the first jaw member, and a second sealing electrode is located on the second jaw member. One or more stop members are disposed on the sealing electrodes, the one or more stop members being formed of a compliant material such that they are capable of deforming when the jaw members are moved to their closed position with tissue grasped therebetween.

End effector for electrosurgical instrument

An end effector for an electrosurgical instrument includes a pair of opposing first and second jaw members (), (), movable between an open position in which the jaw members are disposed in a spaced relation relative to one another, and a closed position in which sealing surfaces of the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. A first sealing electrode () is located on the first jaw member (), while a second sealing electrode () is located on the second jaw member (). One or both of the sealing surfaces are provided with electrically conductive stop members (), the one or more stop members maintaining a predetermined spacing between the first and second sealing electrodes when the jaw members are in their closed position. One or more insulating members (), (), () are present to prevent the conductive stop members from causing an electrical short between the first and second sealing electrodes when the jaw members are in their closed position.

Electrosurgical instrument

A method of amputating and morcellating a uterus () includes introducing a first tissue bag () into the abdomen of the patient, and placing the first tissue bag over the uterus. A laparoscopic surgical instrument () is introduced into the first tissue bag, and the uterus () is amputated using the laparoscopic surgical instrument. The first tissue bag () is closed around the amputated uterus, and the first tissue bag containing the amputated uterus is placed into a second tissue bag (). A morcellating instrument is introduced into the second tissue bag () and the uterus is morcellated within the second tissue bag. Once the uterus () has been morcellated, the second tissue bag () containing the morcellated uterus is removed from the abdomen of the patient.
