An electrical connector comprising an insulative body, an electrically conductive terminal received on the insulative body, and electrical shield member disposed in shielding relationship with respect to the terminal, a latching structure integral with the shield member for receiving a latch associated with a mating connector and a second latching structure integral with the shield member for engaging a bracket. There is also a mating connector which has a plurality of peripheral protuberances which preferably contact the panel to improve shielding.

Electrical connector assembly

An electrical connector is provided including a housing adapted to receive a portion of a printed circuit board; an electrical contact connected to the housing; and an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield connected to the housing. The shield includes a front end with a hole for passage of a mating electrical connector through the front end into a receiving area of the housing. The shield further includes a spring finger extending into the hole and a first arm which extends from a rear end of the shield. The arm retains the shield on the housing and is adapted to hold the printed circuit board relative to the housing.

An electrical connector comprising an insulative body, an electrically conductive terminal received on the insulative body, and electrical shield member disposed in shielding relationship with respect to the terminal, a latching structure integral with the shield member for receiving a latch associated with a mating connector and a second latching structure integral with the shield member for engaging a bracket.

The present invention is directed to a gasket for reducing electromagnetic emission from electronic equipment. The gasket is defined by a substantially rectangular body that includes one or more openings through which a portion of a connector, to which the gasket is mounted, may pass. The gasket includes a hook-shaped peripheral edge, a plurality of locating projections, a plurality of retaining clips, and tabs that are formed on opposing sides of the opening(s). The hook-shaped edge, locating projections and retaining clips are adapted to receive and secure a connector to the gasket, and the tabs are provide to make an electrical contact with the connector housing. Additionally, the gasket includes spring fingers for use in mounting the gasket to a bulkhead and for forming an electrical contact with the bulkhead.

Electromagnetic interference shielding gasket

An electrical connector is mounted onto a primary circuit board to provide a stacked interface between plug members and the primary circuit board. The connector comprises a frame having interfaces therein which are spaced in substantially parallel and vertical juxtaposition to each other along the length of the frame. The interfaces are electrically coupled to a primary circuit board by an intermediate circuit board. Each interface includes an inner wall which isolates and provides shielding for the plugs. Additional shielding is provided by a conductive member which is mounted onto the intermediate circuit board, parallel to and between the interfaces. In order to augment the mechanical connection between the connector and the primary circuit board flexible mounting studs are provided on the bottom of the connector.

An apparatus for mounting an electrical connector on a PCI bracket comprising a base containing a plurality of apertures and at least one spring loaded eject pin, a contact support plate having a plurality of slots used to position contact tails on the connectors, a vertical clamp used to hold the connectors in place and a spring loaded plunger positioned in the base such that the PCI bracket is accurately positioned with respect to the connectors.

Apparatus for assembling an electrical connector and method of use

Crimping tooling is disclosed for providing a precision crimped termination (182, 186). The tooling includes a crimping die (92) and mating crimping anvil (136) that will operate in a hand operated tool (50), a power assist hand tool, an applicator in a press, or other machine. The crimping die (92) and crimping anvil (136) each have two spaced barrel engaging portions (116, 118, 164, 166) that form four radially arranged precision indents in the barrel of a plated contact terminal (66) for terminating the contact terminal to an electrical conductor (68). Each of the four barrel engaging portions (116, 118, 164, 166) has an arcuate convex shape without any flat surfaces or sharp corners or edges that could interfere with smooth deformation of the barrel without over stressing the plating during crimping. The end (156) of the anvil terminates at each side wall (158, 160) in somewhat sharp edges (168, 170), respectively, that curve outwardly to help prevent the formation of a burr on the crimped connection. The side walls (120, 122) of the opening (110) in the crimping die (92) are tapered at an angle to the axis (102) of the die that is less than three degrees to further protect against the formation of a burr.

Tools for crimping an electrical contact onto a conductor

A crimping apparatus (50) is disclosed for operation with either a manually operated or powered hand tool (30) or with an applicator in a press. The crimping apparatus (50) includes a crimper (52) and opposing anvil (54), each having a shank (100, 120) with a T-shaped openings (106, 126) therein. A self centering body (60) has one end (68) arranged to slide in one of the T-shaped openings (106) and the other end (70) arranged to slide in the other T-shaped opening (126) so that the crimper (52) and anvil (54) are free to move, with respect to the self centering body (60), toward each other and away from each other. The crimper is secured to a fixed plate (40) in the tool while the anvil is secured to a reciprocable ram (38). A pair of terminal supports (56, 58) are arranged in sliding engagement with two more T-shaped openings (108, 128), one in the crimper and one in the anvil. Each terminal support (56, 58) has a semicirular opening (146) in its end that engages the outer edge of the terminal barrel to hold it in centered position during crimping and to prevent deformation of the edge.

Precision crimping tool

A connector assembly for a heating unit (10) on an aircraft sensor or indicator (or other product application) includes a plug ring (16) having an annular periphery (72) provided with a plurality of circumferentially-spaced plug contacts (40), and a receptacle ring (17) having an annular periphery (42) provided with a corresponding plurality of circumferentially-spaced receptacle contacts (27) receiving the plug contacts (40) on the plug ring (16). The receptacle ring (17) has a pair of adjacent segments each having a plurality of circumferentially-spaced receptacle contacts (27), such that the plug contacts (40) on the plug ring (16) may be received in either plurality of receptacle contacts (27) on the receptacle ring (17).

Heater ring connector assembly

An operating mechanism (50,182) for providing mechanical advantage for mating and unmating a fixture (10) to a receiver (150) manually at a separable interface for mating complementary arrays of electrical connectors (12,152) for use in testing equipment. The leading end (80,88) of the operating mechanism (50) of the fixture is inserted into a receptacle (182) of the receiver and locks to secure the fixture to the receiver, simultaneously unlocking a subassembly (58) within the operating mechanism to be manually rotated to fully mate the now-adjacent arrays of connectors. The subassembly (58) is movably secured within an outer barrel (54) affixed to a frame (20) of the fixture and includes an axially spring biased central shaft (70) movable within an inner barrel (72). Arrays of locking balls (76,82) within apertures 86,90) of the inner barrel move between annular grooves 78,84) of the central shaft (70) and annular grooves 186,142) of a surrounding cylinder (either the receptacle 182) or the outer barrel (54)) to lock and unlock the central shaft from being axially moved with respect to the particular surrounding cylinder. An acme screw (100) within the operating mechanism converts manual rotation of a handle (52) into gradual axial movement with substantially enhanced force.

Interface engagement and locking system

An assembly (10) of circuit boards (12,14,16) stacked in a parallel array, having first connectors (40) about the periphery of first circuit boards (12,16) and second connectors (90) about the periphery of second circuit board (14) defining aligned connector stacks. Contacts (52) of the first connectors (40) include socket contact sections (56) along mating faces (48) and post sections (58) extending through board through-holes to ends matable with the socket contact sections of the connector adjacent thereto in the stack and are joined as desired to associated traces of the first circuit board through which they extend. Contacts (104) of second connectors (90) terminate within the connector housing and include post sections (106) extending similarly through second circuit board (14) to mate with contacts (52) of an adjacent first connector (40). Elongate fasteners (120) extend through mounting holes (30) of the circuit boards and through mounting holes (44,94) of the connectors, securing the assembly together to be manipulated as a unit.

A mating connector assembly 10, 100 defining an ultra-low profile mating interface, with plug and receptacle connectors 10 and 100 mounted on opposed adjacent surfaces of panels 12, 102 slidably movable along each other. Plug connector 10 including a pair of spring arm contact members 14, 16 affixed to an end portion of a first flexible film circuit element 22 and extending from a housing 50. Receptacle connector 100 includes a transverse second flexible film circuit element 122 traversing a contact-receiving cavity 116 of second housing 130, with contact pads engaged by contact surfaces 42, 44 of contact members 14, 16 upon connector mating.

Ultra-low profile matable electrical connector assembly

A bulkhead connector includes an array of bus bars extending from a first face to a second face for interconnecting associated power cables on opposing sides of the bulkhead, and is also suited for bulkhead openings of the type having a cylindrical sleeve extending therearound outwardly from the bulkhead. Contained between a pair of metal plates and within a cylindrical sleeve is an elastomeric member through which the bus bars extend, the elastomeric member being compressed within the sleeve upon said first and second metal plates being tightly drawn toward each other by a stud assembly. The metal plates and elastomeric member provide fire resistant material extending transversely completely across the bulkhead opening, with apertures through which extend the bus bars. Exposed contact sections of the bus bars permit terminals to be fastened thereto, and the connector is adapted to prevent rotation of the fastened terminals during in-service use.

Firewall connector

An electrical connector (10) enabling interconnection of terminals (84,86) of pairs of power cables (80,82) in a high temperature environment includes a body member (12) having a plurality of connection sites (18) separated by barrier walls (66), a plurality of terminal bolts (20) secured to the body member with threaded shanks (26) extending from enlarged bolt heads (28) through apertures thereof and outwardly between the barrier walls to receive ring sections (88,90) of the terminals thereonto, and clamping members (22) threadable onto the threaded shanks to clamp the terminals against the termination face (76) of the body member and tightly against each other. A top cover (14) is securable over the terminations and completes surrounding leading ends of the threaded shanks with dielectric material between connection sites. A bottom cover (16) holds the enlarged bolt heads in respective recesses. Each terminal bolt (20) includes an annular compression surface (32) about flush with the termination face of the body member against which the ring sections of the terminals can be compressed under torque of about fourteen foot-pounds.
