Further fluid flow control may be had by controlling the size of holes in the spool. The increase of fluid flow attributable to the groove may be at least 50%, 100% or even 200% compared with the at least one groove being absent.

The pressure enters the end of the oil control valve where the resultant pressure force is balanced by the differential area of the spool. The spool contains two plate check valves enabling cam torque recirculation of oil from A to B or B to A depending upon the spool position. In mid position, the spool lands block A and B to hold the cam phaser position. Three or five positions may be utilized.

A valve timing control device, in effect a cam phaser, for an internal combustion engine. The valve timing control device includes a rotor connected to a camshaft and having a plurality of vanes. A stator is engaged with the rotor, and includes a plurality of webs. Pressure chambers are provided between each of the webs and vanes. The cam phaser is configured to automatically locate to its mid-lock position, without having to rely on electronic control. At least one embodiment of the present invention is configured to use cam torque to recirculate oil from one side of the vanes of the rotor to the other.

The hydraulic valve is configured to limit the flow of pressure medium to both the advance and retard chambers, while allowing a locking pin of the cam phaser to drain. The hydraulic valve effectively limits flow during the self-centering operation of the can phaser. This is important for the system function, since it allows the phaser to select a side (i.e., the advance or retard chamber) to bleed off, reducing pressure on that side, which allows the cam phaser to move towards the mid-park (i.e., locking) position.
