An optical measurement system comprising an optical source configured for delivering sample light in an anatomical structure, such that the sample light is scattered by the anatomical structure, resulting in physiological-encoded signal light that exits the anatomical structure, an optical detector configured for detecting the physiological-encoded signal light, and a processor configured for acquiring a TOF profile derived from the physiological-encoded signal light, the initial TOF profile having an initial contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) between a plurality of states of a physiological activity in the anatomical structure. The processor is further configured for applying one or more weighting functions to the initial TOF profile to generate a weighted TOF profile having a subsequent CNR greater than the initial CNR between the plurality of states of the physiological activity. The processor is further configured for processing the weighted TOF profile, and identifying one of the plurality of states of the physiological activity.

A method for bonding together two substrates includes providing a molecular glue including glue molecules, each of the glue molecules having at least two &#x2014;O&#x2014;Si or &#x2014;O&#x2014;Al moieties; reacting a surface of a first substrate with the molecular glue to attach the glue molecules to the surface of the first substrate by at least one of the &#x2014;O&#x2014;Si or &#x2014;O&#x2014;Al moieties; and reacting a surface of a second substrate with the molecular glue to attach the glue molecules to the surface of the second substrate by at least another one of the &#x2014;O&#x2014;Si or &#x2014;O&#x2014;Al moieties. The method can be used for a variety of applications including manufacturing a vapor cell.

A proton exchange membrane includes a porous structural framework and a boron-based acid group bonded to the porous structural framework. The porous structural framework may be formed of an amorphous or crystalline inorganic material and/or a synthetic or natural polymer. The boron-based acid group may be a tetravalent boric acid derivative, such as a cyclic boric acid derivative, borospiranic acid, or a borospiranic acid derivative. The boron-based acid group may be the reaction product of boric acid or a boric acid derivative and a poly-hydroxy compound.

A method for generating alkali metal in a zero oxidation state includes reacting an alkali metal compound having a &#x2014;S-M substituent, where M is an alkali metal and S is sulfur, with gold in a zero oxidation state to release the alkali metal in the zero oxidation state. For example, an alkali metal alkylthiolate can be reacted with a gold in a zero oxidation state to release the alkali metal in the zero oxidation state. As another example, an alkali metal sulfide can be reacted with gold in a zero oxidation state to release the alkali metal in the zero oxidation state. The alkali metal may be used in various applications including vapor cells, magnetometers, and magnetic field measurement systems.
