A safety trocar is provided in which the cannula is reciprocally mounted to the cannula housing and reciprocates into the cannula housing when a proximally directed force is applied thereto. The piercing tip is maintained in the exposed position by a latching mechanism associated with the obturator shaft, and is automatically withdrawn into the cannula under the force of a spring when the proximal force is removed from the cannula, the cannula thus advancing distally and releasing the latching mechanism. Penetration force is maintained at a minimum, and safe and efficacious trocar entry is facilitated.

Safety trocar

A method and device is described for producing carbon dioxide and water vapor, together as an insect attractant, near an insect killing field. The invention describes an economical and convenient way of producing the insect attractant by utilizing paraffin in combustion.

Method and device for producing carbon dioxide and water vapor near an insect killing field

A pneumatically powered trocar assembly includes a source of compressed gas which releases a metered amount of gas to a chamber. A piston slidably positioned within the chamber is driven forward by the compressed gas introduced therein, and an obturator with a tissue piercing tip are advanced thereby. Optionally, a sensor detects the presence of body tissue within the cutting path of the tip and blocks the passage of compressed gas to the chamber, or alternatively, opens an escape vent to release compressed gas therefrom if insufficient body tissue resistance is encountered. The powered trocar assembly is intended for use in conjunction with a cannula assembly to create a passage to the interior of a body cavity for conducting surgical procedures.

A relay lens assembly and a method for manufacturing a relay lens system for an endoscope includes the steps of providing at least one rod member having first and second curved end surfaces, positioning a mold surface at a predetermined distance from one of the curved end surfaces of the rod member wherein the mold surface has a profile which is the negative of a required optical profile to be formed on the curved end surface, filling a space defined by the predetermined distance between the mold surface and the curved end surface with a moldable light transmissive material and solidifying the moldable material to form a molded layer adhered to the curved end surface.

Replicated relay lens system

The handle has a blade mounting portion with a raised boss forming a slot. The blade has a boss receiving recess with a portion defined by an edge. The cartridge removeably retains the blade. It has an opening into which the blade mounting portion of the handle can be inserted. A normally arcuate spring is mounted in cantilever fashion within the enclosure. The tip of the blade abuts a stop surface proximate the unattached end of the spring. In its arcuate state, the spring retains the blade in a position where the edge of the blade can enter the slot in the handle. As the blade is moved by insertion of the handle, against the urging of the spring, the spring straightens allowing the blade to assume a position where the boss can be fully seated within the recess, mounting the blade on the handle. The blade is then removed from the cartridge by withdrawing the handle. After use, the blade is reinserted into the cartridge. A pushbutton, accessible from the exterior of the cartridge, is depressed to cause the boss to withdraw from the slot to dismount the blade from the handle. A stand for retaining multiple cartridges is provided. Each cartridge is supported by a rigid finger aligned with the pushbotton. Applying a downward force on the cartridge causes the pushbutton to depress to dismount the blade.

Surgical blade system

A method for forming a surgical clip and fixture for use therein includes molding a polymeric clip body, the clip body having hinged legs, the polymer of the clip body being substantially amorphous. The clip body can then be moved to a desired configuration while being subjected to a temperature above the glass transition temperature. The molded clip body is then heated to a temperature within the crystallization range for a period of time sufficient to impart at least 20% crystallinity thereto to impart a spring back property. Also disclosed herein is a fixture for forming a surgical clip in accordance with this method.

Forming latchless surgical clip and fixture for use therein

An apparatus for applying a surgical fastener includes a cartridge which holds a plurality of surgical fasteners in an array, a fastener advancing mechanism, and a mechanism for closing the fasteners, which includes an anvil and laterally moving arms to apply lateral force to bend the legs of the distal fastener inwardly to a closed position. The fasteners can be made of a bioabsorbable material.

Apparatus and clip for fastening body tissue

A surgical clip which comprises a staple having a central portion and first and second legs extending from said central portion. A retainer is provided having an opening dimensioned for passage of an end portion of each of said legs when the legs are bent from an open position to a closed position. A ratchet mechanism is provided in the form of a plurality of teeth disposed on the legs adapted to be engaged by a pawl of said retainer.

Surgical clip

An accessory device for dissipating electrical energy from a surgical device is provided. The electrical energy is induced on the surgical device when a charge-inducing instrument, e.g. an unipolar electrocautery device, is energized in proximity thereto. The induced energy is dissipated by conveying the energy along an electrically conductive coating adhered to a housing of the device to an energy dissipation region.

Energy dissipation device

An apparatus for applying a surgical clip which comprises a staple having a central portion and first and second legs extending from said central portion. A retainer is provided having an opening dimensioned for passage of an end portion of each of said legs when the legs are bent from an open position to a closed position. The apparatus comprises staple forming means in the form of a pair of pivotable members movable from an open position to a closed position when slid into engagement with a camming surface. Staple pusher means engage the central portion of the staple and slides the staple distally into contact with an anvil and with the pivotable members to bend the staple legs to their closed position.

Fascia clip and instrument

A disposable apparatus is disclosed for applying latchless surgical clips to body tissue in endoscopic surgical procedures. The latchless clips are resiliently biased to a closed configuration. The apparatus includes a frame which is adapted to be gripped by hand, and an endoscopic section connected to the handle and capable of storing surgical clips in preparation for clipping arteries or other body tissue. The apparatus includes means for advancing each clip sequentially, temporarily opening the clip and advancing the clip further to a pair of distal jaws where the clip is positioned around the body tissue and closes around the tissue. Also included are means for closing the jaws about the clip. When the jaws are closed, the clip advancing means is simultaneously positioned to advance the next clip. The present apparatus also makes it possible to partially close a clip without interfering with the sequential movement of the clip advancing mechanism.

Apparatus and method for applying latchless surgical clips

A trocar penetration depth indicator has a first, inner housing including a first threaded section and longitudinally extending gripping fingers, and a second, outer housing including a camming surface and a second threaded section to engage the first threaded section. The first and second housings slidably mount onto a trocar tube and can be secured relative to the guide tube by rotatably tightening the housings to cause the gripping fingers to firmly grip the trocar tube. Depth penetration indicia is provided on the guide tube surface and sufficient guide tube grasping force is obtained to prevent the depth indicator from being dislodged during trocar insertion. A guide tube positioning device is provided to engage the penetration depth indicator and to secure the guide tube relative to the surrounding skin of the patient in order to prevent inadvertent withdrawal or further insertion of the trocar.

A latchless surgical clip provides effective hemostasis while avoiding or minimizing the risk of injury to the tissue site to which the clip is applied. The clip includes a hinge region having an elastic spring back property so that the legs are spread apart to engage opposing sides of the tissue and then released to return to their tissue clamping (closed) position. A method for forming the latchless surgical clip and a fixture for use therein are also described.
