Methods and apparatus for archival storage of an image are disclosed. The image is converted into one or more bit plane images. Fiducial markers are generated and written onto digital optical tape concurrent with writing the one or more bit plane images onto the digital optical tape.

Digital optical tape archival storage systems and methods are disclosed. A digital optical tape recorder simultaneously writes data and two or more guide tracks onto an unformatted digital optical tape recording medium. A digital optical tape reader includes a camera and an image processor. The camera captures a two-dimensional image of the digital optical tape recording medium including the data and the two or more guide tracks. The image processor extracts the data from the two-dimensional image based, at least in part, on the guide tracks.

Digital optical tape archival storage systems and methods are disclosed. A digital optical tape recorder may simultaneously write data and two or more guide tracks onto a digital optical tape recording medium. A digital optical taper reader may include a camera comprising an array of detectors to capture a two-dimensional image of the digital optical tape recording medium, and an image processor to extract the data from the two-dimensional image. The camera may capture the two-dimensional image of the digital optical tape recording medium without aligning individual data bits recorded on the digital optical tape recording medium to individual detectors within the camera.

Systems and methods are provided for identifying a subset of exemplar images in a set of exemplary images that may be used to generate an image classifier having one or more desirable performance characteristics. A computing system may select every possible subset of exemplar images from a set of exemplar images and may generate a classifier for each selected subset of images. The computing system may use each generated classifier to classify one or more images in order to generate performance statistics related to how each classifier performed when classifying the one or more images. The computing system may identify a particular subset of exemplar images that is associated with performance statistics of a classifier that satisfies one or more desired performance characteristics.

Techniques are described for detecting a vertical line artifact in an image captured with a digital camera. The vertical line artifact may be caused by a defect in the digital camera. Techniques also are described for correcting a vertical line artifact in an image captured with a digital camera. It may be determined that the vertical line artifact includes at least one pixel in the vertical line having a non-zero suppressed signal. A value for the pixel having the non-zero suppressed signal may be determined. A statistically-based correction may be applied to the pixel having the non-zero suppressed signal based on the determination that the pixel has a non-zero suppressed signal and the determined value of the pixel. The image may be a portion of a movie stored on a DVD.
