An investment casting method involves producing a casting shell by applying a hardenable refractory material to a sacrificial pattern. The casting shell having a plurality of phosphate bonds in the hardenable refractory material, which provide increased structural integrity during casting and improved frangibility during shell removal. The casting shell may also have a plurality of gaseous pockets suspended in the refractory material, which do not degrade the structural integrity during casting and provide improved frangibility during shell removal.

Investment casting refractory material

A prefabricated sprue assembly provides attachment to independently-produced investment casting molds to substantially reduce the need for pattern material. Installable connections between the prefabricated sprue assembly and the investment mold allow substantial reduction of scrap loss caused by errors in production of individual investment molds by culling defective molds before installation to the sprue assembly.

Modular casting sprue assembly

A printable refractory material is provided having a liquid and powder component configured for use in a 3-D powder printer, where the material forms hydraulic bonds when the liquid and powder components are combined. Methods of printing the refractory material and forming castings therefrom are also provided.

3-D printed casting shell and method of manufacture

An investment casting method involves producing a casting shell by applying a hardenable moist mixture to a sacrificial pattern. To hasten the hardening of the moist mixture to create the shell, a stucco coat is subsequently applied to the mixture. In some cases, the stucco coat comprises a drier mixture of the elements used in the moist mixture. The drier mixture preferably includes a material that alters the alkalinity of the underlying moist mixture. In some cases, the stucco coat also includes an amorphous mineral silicate. Once the shell is created, a molten metal is introduced into the shell to replace the sacrificial pattern, thereby producing a metal cast item.

Investment casting slurry composition and method of use

A composition and method for forming investment casting shells includes using colloidal silica, zircon flour, and fused silica in a slurry which is applied to a pattern. After the slurry is applied to the pattern, it is allowed to partially or completely solidify. After the shell has solidified, the pattern may be melted or otherwise removed. A molten material is introduced into the shell and allowed to cool to form an article. Finally, the shell is broken away or otherwise removed from the article. The improved shell slurry composition and corresponding method minimizes pattern-to-pour cycle times and is environmentally friendly.

A modular building block characterized by a male-female fastener arrangement between successive layers of blocks, i.e. the blocks are positively positioned by a pattern of locking tabs cooperating with slots. Each modular building block is compartmentalized for receiving insulative material and space for utility passage. Provision is made for readily securing the modular blocks onto a conventional footing and/or foundation. Corners and block staggering between successive layers are effectively achieved through choosing the appropriate pattern presented by the aforesaid male-female fastener arrangement. The modular building blocks are rigid, yet light in weight, due to fabrication material selection.
