A fly-cutting system is disclosed, and in particular one that comprises a dynamically-controllable actuator for controlling the position, orientation, or both position and orientation of a cutting element carried by a fly-cutting head. In certain embodiments, the actuator can adjust the position or orientation of a cutting element, or both, hundreds or thousands of times per second, enabling precise control over the shape of features formed by the cutting element in a surface of a workpiece.

Fly-cutting head, system and method, and tooling and sheeting produced therewith

Methods of fly-cutting a workpiece are disclosed, and in methods in which the position of a fly-cutting head or its associated cutting element is known as a function of time. Also disclosed are methods of forming features, such as grooves or groove segments, in a workpiece such as a cylindrical roll. The features may be provided according to one or more disclosed patterns. Articles made using tools machined in the manner described are also provided, such as polymeric film or sheeting that exhibit certain beneficial properties.

Fly-cutting system and method, and related tooling articles

Methods and systems for forming a displacement scale comprising TIR prisms on a substrate are described. A system for forming the displacement scale includes one or more rollers having a pattern of total internal reflection (TIR) prism features in negative relief. As the rollers are rotated, the scale is formed on the substrate. The rollers may also include pattern features in negative relief. Rotation of the rollers simultaneously forms the displacement scale and the pattern features on the substrate. The TIR prism features of the displacement scale may be oriented to provide measurement of one or more of lateral displacement, longitudinal displacement and angular displacement.

Systems and methods for fabricating displacement scales

An improved receiver system may include an input to receive an input signal, and a signal generating circuit to generate a desired oscillator signal that is a single sideband radio frequency signal of time varying frequency. The receiver may also include a downconversion stage to generate an intermediate frequency (IF) signal based on the input signal and the desired oscillator signal. A signal processing block in the receiver may be used to produce an output signal based on the IF signal by frequency shifting the IF signal by an amount that compensates for the time varying frequency of the desired oscillator signal. The desired oscillator signal may be generated using a vector signal generator that receives a control value from the signal processing block, converts the control value to a pair of analog input signals, and generates the desired oscillator signal by quadrature modulating the pair of analog input signals.

Methods and systems for determining longitudinal position of an elongated web are described. Sensors are used to detect one or more substantially continuous fiducial marks disposed longitudinally on the web. The sensors generate signals associated with the fiducial marks. A position detector receives the signals and determines a longitudinal position of the web using the sensor signals. The fiducial marks may be periodic fiducial marks, such as sine and/or cosine marks on the web and/or may be piecewise continuous marks. The coarse longitudinal position of the web can be determined based on periodically recurring features of the fiducial marks. The fine longitudinal position can be determined based on continuous portions of the fiducial marks between the periodically recurring features.

Measurements, e.g. S-parameter measurements may be performed by obtaining a complex ratio of at least two signals, using a single signal-receiver while eliminating noise problems traditionally associated with single receiver systems. A Vector Signal Generator (VSG) may be used to generate the input stimulus (signal), making it possible to share the local oscillator (LO) signal of the VSG with a single vector receiver, such that the phase noise of the LO signal is common to both the VSG and the vector receiver. When the stimulus signal from the VSG is observed with the vector receiver, the LO phase noise is unobservable, resulting in a significant reduction of the phase noise in the measured signals in both the numerator and the denominator, which in turn leads to a significant reduction in the phase noise of the ratio while retaining the benefits of a simple, single receiver.

A user obtains a set of modules, inserts them into slots of a chassis, and interconnects the modules to form a modular instrument. A signal path extends through the modules. To support calibration of the signal path, a first of the modules (or the chassis or a calibration module) includes a calibration signal generator. A computer directs the first module to apply the calibration signal from the generator to the signal path, and measures the power (or amplitude) of the output of the signal path. The computer reads a factory-measured value A of the calibration signal amplitude from a memory of the first module (or the chassis or the calibration module). The value A and the measured output power of the signal path are used to determine a gain of the signal path. The system compensates for that gain when the signal path is used to measure live operational signals.

User-invoked calibration of modular system using an embedded calibration signal generator

A system and method for synchronizing a plurality of receivers. A tone from a signal generator is swept over a frequency band. A power splitter splits the tone into a plurality of resultant tones that are supplied to the respective receivers. For each receiver, a relative frequency response (including amplitude and phase responses) is measured between the receiver and a master receiver. A linear approximation to the phase response is computed. A digital filter is custom designed for the receiver to compensate for non-uniformity of the amplitude response and for deviations of the phase from the linear approximation. After applying the digital filter, further adjustments are made to remove the time delay corresponding to the linear approximation, e.g., by appropriately configuring a fractional resampler, by adjusting a numerically-controlled oscillator, and/or, by adjusting sample clock phase.

Synchronizing receivers in a signal acquisition system

Receiving a modulated carrier signal that is modulated using a reference signal, wherein an acquisition by a digitizer is synced to the reference signal such that the modulated carrier signal has known timing with respect to a start of an acquisition within the digitizer. Further including routing the modulated carrier signal through a receiver system to generate a processed signal, receiving the processed signal at the digitizer, digitizing the processed signal at the digitizer, and determining a delay of the modulated carrier signal routed through the receiver system based on the timing of the processed signal.

Calibration system and method

Methods and systems for indicating the displacement of a flexible web are described. An elongated, flexible web includes an integral scale having scale features configured to modulate energy directed towards the web. A transport mechanism provides relative movement between the web relative to a transducer. The transducer detects energy modulated by the scale features and generates a signal indicting a continuous web displacement based on the modulated energy.

Systems and methods for indicating the position of a web

A cutting tool assembly having a tool post capable of lateral movement along a work piece to be cut and an actuator with a tool tip. The actuator provides for variable control of the movement of the tool tip in an x-direction into the work piece at two simultaneously independent speeds for use in making microstructures in the work piece.
