Uniform adherent coatings of antimicrobial agents are applied to the surface of implants by applying a film of silicone oil to the surface of the implant and then contacting the film-bearing surface with antimicrobial agents in a film-adherent powder form. A durable antimicrobial coating is formed. The coated implants can be packaged using mechanized implant handling equipment without significant loss of the antimicrobial coating.

Method of making antimicrobial coated implants

Uniform adherent coatings of antimicrobial agents are applied to the surface of implants by applying a film of silicone oil to the surface of the implant and contacting the film-bearing surface with antimicrobial agents in a film-adherent form. A durable antimicrobial coating is formed. The coated implants can be packaged using mechanized implant handling equipment without significant loss of the antimicrobial coating. In a preferred embodiment a controlled-release implant for administering an anabolic agent is coated with a durable nonvulcanizing silicone fluid plus oxytetracycline hydrochloride coating which does not interfere with diffusion of the anabolic agent from the implant.
