A pedestal console for a motor vehicle includes a housing stationarily mounted within the vehicle beneath and transverse to a bench seat of the vehicle. The console includes an air duct defined by structural features extending the length of the console. This allows air from a forward ventilation system to be provided, through the air duct, to an aft portion of the vehicle. The structural features extend between the bottom surface and the top surface of the console and are dimensioned to allow the console to accept passenger floor loads. To reduce cost and parts count, the entire console is formed of a one piece construction. Finally, an interior opening may be provided to route wiring of the vehicle's electrical system to the aft portion of the vehicle.

Structural pedestal conduit for air handling and electrical routing

A cockpit assembly generally includes a cast alloy backbone, an intermediate plastic support member, and an instrument panel. The cast alloy backbone extends laterally and defines attachment features. The intermediate support member provides structural support to the various devices of the cockpit assembly, and is connected to the backbone through molding of the plastic around the attachment features. The instrument panel is connected to the support member and defines an interior surface exposed to the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

An integrated vehicle structure includes an electronic site in a plastic support structure. The electronic site has a flexible substrate with electronic components mounted thereon. The plastic support structure defines a plastic mounting surface which includes a plurality of elongated ribs projecting from the plastic support structure. Each of the ribs have a side edge forming a portion of the plastic mounting surface. The flexible substrate is mounted to the plastic mounting surface, and a plurality of air flow passageways are defined by adjacent ribs in the flexible substrate. A method support structure may also be provided which defines a metal mounting surface. One or more electronic sides may be attached to the metal and plastic mounting surfaces.

Electronically integrated vehicle structure

An automobile instrument panel assembly may be used in the cockpit of an automobile. The assembly includes a cross-car structure having a plurality of recesses and protrusions along the length of the structure and a plurality of generally planar surfaces. A plurality of HVAC components are adapted to closely fit within one or more of the plurality of recesses within the structure, and at least one flatwire bus is affixed to the generally planar surfaces of the structure.

Instrument panel with integrated HVAC and electronic systems

An integrated vehicle structure combines the mechanical and electrical systems of the vehicle. The integrated vehicle structure generally comprises a vehicle support structure, a flatwire extending along the vehicle support structure, and an electronic site incorporated to the flatwire. Preferably, the electronic site is supported directly on the vehicle support structure, and is a flexible circuit board. Alternately, the electronic site can be a rigid circuit board. Most preferably, the electronic site is integrally formed with the flatwire. The vehicle support preferably comprises a cross-car beam, which includes both metal and plastic components.

Electronically integrated vehicle support structure

An automobile instrument panel assembly for the cockpit of an automobile. The assembly includes, in one embodiment, a cross-car beam structure for supporting the assembly. The structure extends across a substantial portion of the cockpit and defines a plurality of generally planar mounting sites and further defines at least one recess. At least one substrate is mounted to the beam and includes at least one area of the substrate populated by electronic components on both sides of the substrate. The area is aligned over the at least one recess, and an instrument panel cover is removably positioned over the substrate and the structure.
