A variable grip blind rivet has a rivet body with a first shank adapted to be inserted into a hole in a workpiece and having an axial bore, and a flange at a first end of the first shank for abutting the workpiece when the first shank is inserted into the hole in the workpiece. A mandrel has a head, for engaging a second end of the first shank, and a second shank adapted to extend through the axial bore. The head has an abutment portion for abutting the first end of the first shank. At least one protrusion adjacent the abutment portion defines a recess for receiving the first end of the first shank during setting of the rivet.

Variable grip blind rivet

A blind rivet includes a hollow rivet body having a longitudinally extending indented groove. The groove may be shaped to impart rivet setting characteristics that may be varied to provide desirable fastening characteristics for joints in a number of industries. The shape of the indentation on the rivet body may be varied to cause a portion of the rivet body to collapse and form a secondary head at a predetermined longitudinal location.

Blind rivet and method

A variable grip blind rivet includes a tubular rivet body and a mandrel. The rivet body has a first shank, insertable into a hole in a workpiece, and a flange at a first end of the first shank for abutting the workpiece when so inserted. The mandrel has a head, for engaging a second end of the first shank, and a second shank adapted to extend through the axial bore of the rivet body. The head has an abutment portion for abutting the first end of the first shank, and the second shank has a first reduced diameter portion adapted to break when a predetermined tensile is loaded applied. At least one protrusion adjacent the abutment portion defines a recess for receiving the first end of the first shank during setting of the rivet.

A blind rivet assembly is provided. In another aspect of the present invention, a blind rivet has ends that are received within countersinks in one or more workpieces and a mandrel head is completely pulled through the rivet without being severed from a mandrel stem. A further aspect of the present invention includes a mandrel with one or more ribs located on an outwardly tapering shoulder.

Blind rivet

A rivet body is formed with cutting teeth in a forward edge of the rivet body. A mandrel is formed at a forward end with an enlarged head having a drill point thereon. A plurality of the rivet bodies are stacked on the mandrel, with the drill point. The rivet body is rotated and, through rotative coupling, the mandrel is also rotated. The rotating drill point forms pilot holes in workpieces, and the rotating cutting teeth enlarge the pilot holes to form holes for receipt of a cylindrical portion of the lead rivet body.

Self-drilling pull-through blind rivet and methods of and apparatus for the assembly and setting thereof

A river body () is formed with cutting teeth () in a forward edge () of the rivet body. A mandrel () is formed at a forward end with an enlarged head () having a drill point () thereon. A plurality of the rivet bodies () are stacked on the mandrel (), with the drill point (). The rivet body () is rotated and, through rotative coupling, the mandrel () is also rotated. The rotating drill point () forms pilot holes I workpieces () and (), and the rotating cutting teeth () enlarge the pilot holes to form holes () and (), respectively, for receipt of a cylindrical portion () of the lead rivet body ().

The current invention is directed to a three piece blind fastener comprising a mandrel, a tubular body portion ofand a radially extending flange, wherein the cylindrical bodyis mounted on an elongate stemof the mandrel so as to extend co-axially about a central axis of such blind fastener, and the mandrel having a mandrel head in operative engagement with a tail end of the body for transmitting force there to during setting of the fastener, wherein the radially extending flange is separate from and held in crimped engagement with the body portion at or towards a front end of the tubular body so as to be axially remote from the tail end of such body.

Three part blind fastener

There is provided a blind fastener setting tool () which has a front end face () against which a blind fastener () is held during a conventional setting operation and which further has a piezo-electric thin film load measuring device () mounted on this front face so as to be disposed and compressed between the front face () and a flange () of the fastener () during the setting operation so as to record a low voltage electrical signal indicative of the load being exerted thereon. There is further provided a method of measuring such load during the setting of a blind fastener by positioning a piezo-electric thin film load measuring device between a setting tool and a fastener and subsequently measuring a low voltage signal created as a result of deformation of the piezo-electric thin film during the setting operation and analysing this signal as indicative of the load exerted on the fastener.

Blind fastener setting tool

A blind rivet having a mandrel with a predetermined breakable stem ( ) disposed within a body with a bored ( ) shank ( ). A radial flange ( ) is formed on one end of the shank and the other end ( ) of the shank is engaged with the enlarged head ( ) up the stem the diameter of which is substantially equal to that of the shank. The mandrel below the enlarged head has a plurality of indentations ( ) formed on the stem to define a square of reduced cross-sectional area. The shank has an enlarged internal cross-sectional area ( ) to substantially engage the indentations of the stem below and adjacent to the enlarged head of the stem.

A blind rivet setting tool (10) includes a front end (2) having an outer support barrel (4), an inner pulling mandrel (6) and a rivet flange contacting face (8). A portion of the outer support barrel (4) and a portion of the inner mandrel (6) are cut away along the length of the tool (10) extending from the rivet flange contacting face (8), to provide a cut-away face (12), a slot (14) extending from the rivet flange contacting face (8) of the outer support barrel (4) and comprising a first section (16) located in the outer support barrel (4) and sized to accept the mandrel of a blind rivet, a second section (18) located in the pulling mandrel (6) and sized to accept the mandrel of a blind rivet and a third section (34) located in the pulling mandrel (6) and sized to accept the pulling head of the mandrel of the blind rivet is formed along the length of the barrel (4) and pulling mandrel (6), open to the cut-away face (12) of the barrel (4) and pulling mandrel (6) and retaining means (20) is provided to retain a rivet in the slot (14).

Blind rivet setting tool

A blind fastener system comprises (a) an outer sleeve (2) comprising a flange (4) at one end, which sleeve (2) is provided with a counterbore (9) at the end adjacent to the flange (4), and a relatively thin wall section (8) which extends from the flange (4) and terminates in an abutment surface (12) and; (b) an inner sleeve (14) having an inner threaded bore (20), which inner sleeve (14) comprises a head portion (16) which terminates in a shoulder (22) and a second portion (18) extending from the head portion (16) towards the operating side (24) of the fastener (10) and having a relatively thin wall (28), which second portion (18) has a shape which matches the shape of the inner bore of the outer sleeve (2). The inner and outer sleeves (2,14) are adapted to be assembled together so that the abutment surface (12) of the outer sleeve (2) abuts against the shoulder (22) of the inner sleeve (14). The flange (4) of the outer sleeve (2) has a plain outer diameter, and sleeve portion (23) having a cross-section which is of such a shape that the outer sleeve (2) is restrained from rotation relative to the workpiece (38) in which it is mounted, is provided between the flange (4) and the relatively thin walled section (8). The second portion (18) of the inner sleeve (14) is provided on its outer face (32) with a profile (30,40) which engages with the inner face (34) of the wall of the flanged portion (4) of the outer sleeve (2) when the fastener (10) has been set.

Blind threaded nut

An improved blind rivet assembly is disclosed, in which a plastics cylinder is moulded along a pulling stem of a long break mandrel. On setting the mandrel is broken within the cylinder providing the cylinder with an additional degree of shear strength, allowing the cylinder to be used as a support.

A non-blind rivet is disclosed that can be used to form a joint without the need for brazing, welding or threaded locknuts. The rivet 1 is placed in compression by opposing dies 15,20 causing a narrow region of the rivet wall to buckle forming a fold 24, the rivet thus being held to a workpiece 12 between a flange 6 and the fold 24.

Non-blind rivet

A blind rivet comprises a rivet body with an axial through bore, a head at one end and inwardly extending lugs at the tail which are provided with recesses. The rivet may be set by a tool having lugs adapted to engage in the recesses, and may be used as a drainage passage or as part of a releasable fastener.
