A system includes an electrical apparatus configured to monitor or control one or more aspects of an electrical power distribution network; and a control system including more than one electronic processor, where the electronic processors are configured to cause the control system to interact with the electrical apparatus, an interaction between the control system and the electrical apparatus including one or more of the control system providing information to the electrical apparatus and the control system receiving information from the electrical apparatus, and if some of the electronic processors are unable to cause the control system to interact with the electrical apparatus, at least one of the other electronic processors is able to cause the control system to interact with the apparatus.

Control system for an electrical apparatus

An electrical apparatus of an electrical power distribution network may be controlled by accessing, at a control system, one or more operating parameters, the operating parameters being associated with the operation and control of the electrical apparatus; adjusting one or more of the accessed operating parameters, the adjustment being based on data associated with the electrical apparatus; and generating a control signal for the electrical apparatus based on at least one adjusted parameter, the control signal being sufficient to control the electrical apparatus in accordance with the adjusted operating parameter, where controlling the electrical apparatus includes causing contacts of the electrical apparatus to disconnect from each other to prevent electrical current from flowing through the electrical apparatus and causing the contacts of the electrical apparatus to connect to each other to allow current to flow through the electrical apparatus.

Controlling an electrical apparatus

Aspects of manual multi-phase voltage control are described. In one embodiment, a voltage regulator controller includes switches for coupling power from an energized phase to a de-energized phase. For example, the voltage regulator controller may include a first power switch electrically coupled to drive circuitry of a first voltage regulator, a first phase output voltage of a multi-phase power delivery system, and a second phase output voltage of the multi-phase power delivery system. In certain aspects, the first power switch selectively toggles an electrical coupling between the drive circuitry of the first voltage regulator and one of the first phase output voltage and the second phase output voltage. Powering a voltage regulator of a de-energized phase with power from an energized phase may peg the operation of the voltage regulator, as necessary, to maintain the balance of the power distribution system, for example.

Manual multi-phase voltage control

A universal-voltage discrete input circuit uses a high voltage depletion-mode field effect transistor in combination with a low-voltage, adjustable precision shunt regulator and an isolation circuit for interfacing a low voltage digital logic circuit to a switched external voltage ranging from about 7 volts to about 1000 volts AC or +/&#x2212; DC, at a low fixed current. In addition to the wide input voltage range accepted at a uniform low current value, very high voltage isolation is provided between the external voltage and the low voltage digital logic circuit, and elimination of ground loops and common mode noise.

Universal-voltage discrete input circuit

At least two communications cards are utilized to communicate with at least two Ethernet ports, each having unique MAC and IP addresses, and at least two different protocols. At least two central processing units (CPUs) are coupled to the at least two communications cards through a manageable Ethernet switch. One of the at least two CPUs is a primary (main) CPU and is capable of communicating using a limited number of native Ethernet protocols. Another one or more of the at least two CPUs is dedicated to performing conversion of additional, more complicated protocols to be sent to the primary CPU in at least one of its native Ethernet protocols. This off-loads the primary CPU from having to handle these additional, complicated protocols, thereby reducing the amount of protocol software/firmware required to be integrated with the primary CPU with a subsequent savings in boot-up time and background software overhead.
