End mill with positive rake indexable insert

An improved end mill and method of manufacture with an enhanced number of effective teeth. A unique segmented insert configuration maintains a positive axial rake in a negative rake seating face.

End mill cutting tool

A disposable cutting insert for chip forming which provides first chip forming surfaces in the form of depressions and second chip forming surfaces also in the form of depressions such that if a respective chip is not curled and broken along a first chip forming surface, a second surface will effect such a result.

Cutting insert

A rotary cutting tool including an elongated generally cylindrical holder having a recess into which is fitted a disposable cutting insert. The insert is held in place by a clamping member which bears against a surface of the insert and which is attached to the holder by a clamping screw. Radial adjustment of the insert can be effected by adjusting screws which have camming surfaces which bear against a corresponding camming surface of the insert. In axial cross section, the axis of each adjustment screw is parallel to the axis of the clamping screw and to a horizontal axis of the holder, and an axis of the insert is at an angle relative to a vertical axis of the holder.

Rotary cutting tool

Ball nose end mill and method of manufacturing replaceable on-edge high positive single cutting edge triangular inserts each with a pair of dovetail side walls firmly secured by a central screw in a matching dovetail body pocket. Right cylindrical or conical segment convex surface terminating in arcuate cutting edge for generating hemispherical segment is pressed on powdered metal blank with positive rake angle by oblique faced punch and reaction end of uniform straight triangular wall die inherently developing the dovetail side walls.

Ball nose end mill and method of manufacture

An end milling tool having a positive axial rake angle in side elevation to facilitate removal of chips from the surface of a workpiece and a curved cutting edge having a neutral (zero) to positive rake angle in bottom plan view as it progressively cuts to enhance chip removal while precluding welding at the work area and enabling the use of a low cutting force. The tool cutting area is formed by a rhomboid-shaped indexable cutting insert at one end having an angular axial rake with a unique curved surface in side elevation provided with a lead corner and a strong included angle in an end elevational view. Other inserts are mounted on the tool above the rhomboid insert to form the remainder of the cutting area and are circular in side elevational view. Each of the rhomboid and circular inserts are mounted in an insert seat having at least one pair of flat side surfaces in abutting relationship with compatible surfaces in the pocket to obtain maximum rigidity in seating and prevent rotation of the insert. The inserts are mounted in adjacent helical rows adjacent to and each having a curved cutting edge portion extending into a helical flute or slot.

End mill cutting tool and indexable insert therefor

A disposable cutting insert which presents a positive rake cutting edge to a work piece having surfaces which are angularly oriented to promote smooth cutting action while reducing chatter, vibration, forces and power.

An indexable insert end mill having multiple triangular inserts spaced axially in overlapping cutting relation in isolated pockets arranged along a gradual helical angle extending axially of the end mill such pattern of axially spaced cutters being repeated at three 120.degree. circumferentially spaced positions on the periphery of the body. In a typical case the three helical rows of inserts each has five inserts equally spaced axially in overlapping relation and circumferentially in 40.degree. increments so that three effective teeth are provided at each of the five axial positions.

Multiple insert end mill

Pin lock insert holder constructed as an essentially straight lever having longitudinally spaced hold down and fulcrum projections on opposite sides and a lever actuating recess engaged by an angularly related screw. An additional shim retention projection and snap ring accommodate loosening for insert replacement with secure retention of pin and shim against removal or dislocation. Modifications without shim retention accommodate small inserts with shorter lock pins.

Pin lock insert holder

A cutting tool, for example a milling cutter, capable of omini-directional machining of a workpiece as disclosed. In a preferred form, the cutting tool is embodied as a ball nosed end mill having a cylindrical shank terminating in a spherically shaped cutting end with recesses shaped for receipt of at least two indexable cutting inserts, each insert mounted in lay-down fashion, and providing a portion of an effective overall arcuate cutting edge, the cutting zones of each insert overlapping each other. Each insert has the form of an equilateral polygon bounded by planar flanks, each flank intersecting a convex portion of a major face of an insert to form an arcuate cutting edge. The convex major face portion forms the clearance face and the planar flank portion the rake face for each associated arcuate cutting edge.

Cutting tool and insert therefor

A cutting tool for improved material removal efficiency at relatively high feed rates is disclosed. In a preferred form of an indexable polygonal cutting insert, an edge land and chip contacting ramp surfaces in at least a top face of the insert are advantageously arranged for reduced cutting forces and friction, ample cutting edge strength and inducement of free chip flow. In order to overcome deleterious chip convergence and resultant high pressures in the vicinity of the nose radius of the cutting corner of the insert, a recessed control surface is positioned in each corner portion of the polygonal insert.
