An optical interconnect system includes a stacked arrangement of optical lightpipe layers, one layer assigned to each emitter of the system. The various optical lightpipe layers are designed to provide the same level of light to each receptor of the system. The optical lightpipe layers are very thin, allowing the emitter and receptor devices of the system to span the entire optical lightpipe layer assembly. The path loss between every emitter and every receptor over the entire system can be balanced, i.e., made substantially the same, or otherwise set as desired with respect to individual emitters and receptors.

A connection system for providing multiple modes of electromagnetic connection to a device. This system includes a ribbon cable with a plurality of multi-mode electromagnetic conductors arranged in a serial array, one alongside the other including a central optical conductor disposed between a pair of electrical conductors. The system also includes a multi-mode electromagnetic connector, that includes a housing, and optical transducers disposed between a pair of electrical terminals that have insulation piercing free ends. A cover that latchingly engages the housing applies pressure to the ribbon cable, forcing the ribbon cable to be pierced by the upper ends of the terminals and pressing the optical conductor into optical communication with said transducers. The electrical conductors carry electrical power comprising alternating current, at a frequency ranging between 10 and 30 kHz.

An apparatus and method of manufacture for a light source housing apparatus. The housing is insert molded around a plurality of electrically separated leads and defines a cavity. A portion of each lead is exposed along a bottom surface of the housing. Two or more leads have terminal portions near a rear surface of the housing. A lead, which can be used to protect against electrostatic discharge, is also mounted along a front face of the housing and terminates at a ring portion which defines an opening that is aligned with the cavity. The opening of the ring portion is preferably sized and shaped to correspond to an outer peripheral surface of a lens, lightpipe or other optical media, so that the lens can be inserted through the ring portion and into the cavity. A light source, such as an LED, is mounted within a cutout of the housing. The housing is manufactured using lead sets each having pre-formed leads indexed by a leadframe through an injection mold to form the housing around each lead set. After the insert molding process at least a portion of the leadframe is removed to electrically isolate the leads. If used with surface mount technology, the housing is preferably self-aligning.

The present invention includes an apparatus and a method for transceiver self-diagnostic testing in a communication system. A feedback unit (228, 326) is utilized that allows performance of a loopback test independent of a transmit frequency to receive frequency difference without undue proliferation of circuitry.

A two-way radio communications system includes a battery-operated portable unit and a base unit having a receptacle for receiving the portable unit when the portable unit is not in use. A security circuit in each unit allows communication with other units only upon the reception of an address code corresponding to an address code stored in the unit. When the portable unit is seated in the base unit receptacle, the batteries of the portable unit are recharged by current supplied by the base unit. At the same time, the address code of the base unit is entered into the portable unit by encoding circuitry which modulates the battery charging current in accordance with the address code. Circuitry within the portable unit demodulates the charging current to recover the address code for storage in the security circuit of the portable unit. The invention can also be used in systems where data other than address codes must be sent to a unit being charged.

A wireless telephone communication system 10 is provided in which a portable unit 12 communicates with a base unit 11 over a wireless (radio) communication link 15. Access to a telephone network 15b by the portable unit 12, via the base unit 11, is permitted when the base and portable units have corresponding ID codes stored therein. The base ID code is hardwired into the base unit 11, and the portable unit 12 learns its ID code from the base unit in response to mechanically coupling the base and portable units together via plug and socket assemblies 28 and 45. The base and portable units each have associated microprocessors 22 and 40 which implement the transfer of an ID code to the portable unit from the base unit via conductors (24'-42') which are part of the plug and socket assemblies. The plug and socket assemblies, when mated, also provide a connection between a battery charging supply circuit 25 in the base and a battery 46 in the portable. Reset circuits 29 and 50 are provided in the base and portable units and control the resetting of the microprocessors 22 and 40.

A microprocessor controlled radio receiver system for switching bandwidths of an intermediate frequency stage from a normally scanning mode using a relatively narrow bandwidth to a second mode using a relatively wide bandwidth automatically when there are no interfering signals from adjacent channels of a channel or station selected for receiving. Upon selection of a channel for listening the microprocessor controlled synthesizer causes the synthesizer to scan up one adjacent channel and down one adjacent channel to determine if there is an interfering signal therefrom and then returns to the selected channel. In the event of no interfering signal from an adjacent channel, switching is effected in the IF stage from a narrow bandwidth to a wide bandwidth to improve the quality of reception. If there is an adjacent channel signal detected of sufficient IF energy next to the selected channel, then the narrow bandwidth mode used during the scan will be maintained.

Automatic IF selectivity for radio receiver system

A dual rate bi-directional switching system is utilized to control a radio receiver function. An actuator rotates and translates in order to sequentially actuate selected electrical switches which are coupled to a logic circuit by means of two conductors. The logic circuit establishes logic signals to control both the direction and rate of change of the function in response to the position of the actuator.
