An apparatus is provided having a rotor inside a membrane for the aseptic vortex flow concentration of a liquid or semisolid dispersion which has a shed-resistant bearing interface so that unwanted bearing material does not contaminate the substances, e.g., pharmaceutical and biological materials, that are being processed.

Apparatus for aseptic vortex flow concentration

A process for the aseptic concentration of collagen from about 0.25% (w/w) suspensions to gels of 15% using vortex flow filtration with a variety of membrane types--ultrafiltration and microfiltration and polymeric and stainless steel is provided. The resulting gels are suitable for use in medical products and/or pharmaceutical formulations. This process achieves high degree of concentration in a closed system and at high flux with minimal trans-membrane pressure drop.

Aseptic collagen concentration process

An apparatus for mixing a particulate material into a liquid includes a pair of variable volume receptacles interlinked by a communication passage. A combined volume of liquid and particulate material is received within the variable volumes, and the volume of the variable volumes is alternately reduced and to force the materials back and forth through the connection passage. The variable volumes may be formed from a rigid walled cylinder having a free floating piston therein, and the piston and inner diameter may have a tight, sealed gap therebetween. To load the piston into the cylinder without effecting the seals, a load apparatus may be used to depress the seals inwardly of the piston and align the piston in the cylinder.

Apparatus and method of mixing materials in a sterile environment

The present invention is a method for treating bony defects. The method involves contacting the bony defect with a formable composition and allowing the formable composition to solidify. The formable composition is comprised of 2-40% of reconstituted fibrillar atelopeptide collagen and 60-98% calcium phosphate mineral by weight exclusive of moisture. After the formable composition is placed in intimate contact with the bony defect, it is allowed to solidify until it acquires an additional characteristic selected from the group consisting of a compressive modulus of at 10 N/cm.sup.2 or a tensile strength of at least 1 N/cm.sup.2. The method can be used to repair a variety of bony defects such as bone non-union, fresh fractures, periodontal bony pockets, tooth extraction sockets and jaw cysts. Further, the composition can be used to augment an alveolar ridge.

Gamma irradiation of collagen/mineral mixtures

A process for sterilization of collagen/mineral compositions using .gamma. radiation is conducted under conditions which produce a product of desired handling and biocompatibility properties.
