The systems and methods described herein relate to the use of electrostatic elements to confine and circulate ions in trapped orbits so as to facilitate ion-ion and ion-neutral collisions resulting in nuclear fusion reactions. The systems employ a disc shaped cloud of ions wherein the turning region for the recirculating ions are located in a circular space around the periphery of the disc-shaped ion cloud, thereby maximizing the turning space region to increase the number of ions trapped in the device compared to discrete beam devices, which in turn enables higher fusion yield compared to prior art devices.

Embodiments of the invention include methods and devices for the analysis of proteins utilizing a gold coated nanoporous alumina surface for dual ionization mode mass spectrometric analysis using desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) and laser desorption ionization (LDI). Combined use of DESI and LDI gives increased sequence coverage in peptide mixture analysis from a single sample preparation.

A pointed carbon fiber electrospray ionization emitter has a length of electrically conductive fiber that is present within a lumen of a microfluidic device, and protrudes from the terminus. A point is present on an end of the electrically conductive fiber, or the electrically conductive fiber is otherwise sufficiently small on the end to create a desired spray. A conductor supplies electrical current to the electrically conductive fiber. Fluid to be sprayed is transported through the lumen and out of the terminus of the lumen, and an electrical field established by the conductive fiber distributes and sprays the fluid. The emitter is rugged and is able to generate stable electrospray over a wide range of flow rates, voltages, and surface tension variations.
