Surgical robotic systems including synchronous and asynchronous networks and methods employing the same are provided. One surgical robotic system includes a networked computing node, a slave robot assembly, and first and second communication paths. The slave robot assembly includes subunits, communicatively coupled to one another by way of the first communication paths, thereby forming at least a portion of a synchronous network. The networked computing node and a subunit are communicatively coupled to one another by way of the second communication paths, thereby forming at least a portion of a second network, and are configured to communicate one or more packets to one another by way of the second network. The subunit is configured to communicate, with the other subunits via the synchronous network, data from the one or more packets. A clock rate of the synchronous network is independent from a clock rate of the second network.

Disclosed are systems, devices, and methods for synthesizing spatially-aware transitions between camera viewpoints. An exemplary method includes receiving images of a surgical site from a first camera, tracking a position of a robotic arm including a second camera coupled thereto, tracking the pose of the second camera, receiving images of the surgical site from the second camera that are different from the images received from the first camera as the robotic arm is moved to different positions, comparing a pose from which at least one of the images received from the second camera were captured to a pose from which at least one of the images received from the first camera were captured, generating a transition between the compared images, and displaying the transition when switching between displaying images received from the first and second cameras.

Synthesizing spatially-aware transitions between multiple camera viewpoints during minimally invasive surgery

A surgery simulator includes a physical surrogate surgical interface that represents an interface between a user and a simulated patient in a simulated surgical scenario that involves manipulation of both simulated hard and soft tissue. Sensor(s) sense the user's manipulation of the surrogate surgical interface. A surgical simulation generator generates a real time 3D surgical simulation of the surgical scenario based on the manipulation sensed by the sensor(s). The real time 3D surgical simulation comprises real time simulation state data. The surgical simulation generator renders the real time simulation state data into a real time computer graphics generated video representation of the surgical simulation and provides the real time video representation to a display for real time viewing by the user. The surgical simulation generator simulates effects of the manipulation on both simulated hard tissue and simulated soft tissue of the simulated patient.

Combined soft tissue and bone surgical simulator

A microsurgery simulator simulates various microsurgical procedures (e.g., nerve reapproximation, ear drain deployment) that utilize a surgical microscope. A surrogate surgical microscope includes a mobile device and an eye piece. A physical surrogate surgical interface represents an interface between a user and a simulated surgical scenario. Sensors sense the user's manipulation of the surrogate surgical interface. A surgical simulation generator generates a real time 3D surgical simulation based on the sensed manipulation. The generator renders the real time surgical simulation into a real time computer graphics generated video representation that is displayed on a screen of the mobile device. A processor of the mobile device is configured to perform at least a portion of a computational analysis that is used to generate the real time computer graphics generated video representation.
