An apparatus and method for removing particles from a cleaner brush used to clean a photoreceptive surface. The apparatus and method include a cleaning brush or other cleaning device and a ceramic coated detoning roll resistive to wear. The detoning roll consists of a low electrically conductive coating over a conductive substrate material having a short electrical relaxation time constant.

An electroded donor roll for mounting partially within a mixing chamber of a development unit for forming a development zone with an image bearing member and moving charged toner particles from the mixing chamber to the development zone. The donor roll includes a conductive shaft core and a dielectric material layer that is injection molded over the shaft core. The donor roll also includes axially extending electrodes formed in the surface of the dielectric layer, and robust commutator contact pads that are formed from a conductive commutator washer device which has been overmolded into the dielectric layer. The commutator pads each are in line with, and contact an axially extending electrode.

A method for producing discontinuous chips during the machining of a work piece by a cutting tool is provided. The method includes the steps of engaging the cutting tool into the workpiece to produce a continuous chip and directing a stream of cryogen toward the continuous chip, so as to rapidly cool the continuous chip and fracture the continuous chip into the discontinuous chips.

Cryogenic machining of soft/ductile materials

A donor roll having a ceramic coating for use with an electrode structure in a scavengeless development unit of an electrostatographic printer. The ceramic coating consist essentially of a suitable mixture of alumina and titania by weight giving the donor roll a desired resistivity within a range of 2.0.times.10.sup.7 -4.2.times.10.sup.8 (Ohm-cm), a discharge time constant of about 550 microseconds, and a dielectric constant within a range of 16-24 at 100.KHz.

Ceramic coating composition for a hybrid scavengeless development donor

A development apparatus includes a housing defining a chamber holding a supply of two-component developer material including toner, and magnetizable carrier beads. The development apparatus also includes an increased reliability roller assembly within the housing for repeatably transporting a desired quantity of attracted developer material through a development zone. The roller assembly includes a first and a second preformed end cap sections each having a stub shaft portion and a cylindrical capping portion connected to the stub shaft portion and having an outer surface and assembly recesses formed into the outer surface. The roller assembly also includes a sleeve section connecting the first and the second preformed end cap sections, the sleeve section being spincast as a layer over each of the cylindrical capping portions, and into the assembly recesses of the end cap sections, so as to precisely and reliably assemble each capping portion, to the sleeve section.

A method of manufacturing a donor roll having a plurality of electrodes on the surface of the roll is provided. The roll is for use in developing a latent image. The method includes providing a substantially cylindrical member and covering at least a portion of the surface of the member tangentially with a screen. The screen has an aperture therein. The method further includes urging a conductive material through at least a portion of the aperture and onto the surface of the member to form at least one of the electrodes and advancing the screen and the surface of the member synchronously to form subsequent electrodes.

Method of manufacturing a donor roll

A developer unit adapted to develop a latent image with toner particles. The unit includes a housing defining a chamber for storing a supply of toner particles in the chamber. The unit also includes a donor roll including an electrically non-conductive circumferential surface having a conductivity less than 10.sup.-8 (ohm-cm).sup.-1 and having a central region and opposed marginal regions disposed on either side of the central region with the diameter of the central region being less than the diameter of the opposed marginal regions. The donor roll is spaced from the latent image to form a development zone. The unit further includes an electrode member which is positioned in the development zone adjacent opposed marginal regions and spaced from the central regions of the donor roll. The electrode member is electrically biased to detach toner particles from the donor roll to form a toner powder cloud in the development zone with toner particles from the toner cloud developing the latent image.

A donor roll for the conveyance of toner in a development system for an electrophotographic printer includes an outer surface of ceramic. The ceramic has a suitable conductivity to facilitate a discharge time constant thereon of less than 600 microseconds. The donor roll is used in conjunction with an electrode structure as used in scavengeless development.
