Methods and systems are provided for reducing exhaust residuals during light load conditions in a split exhaust engine via a check valve. In one example, a scavenge exhaust manifold may be maintained above a threshold pressure by introducing fresh air into the scavenge manifold during a valve overlap period, the scavenge manifold coupled to a cylinder of an engine and coupled to an intake passage of the engine.

Methods and systems are provided for controlling operating of a split exhaust engine system including a scavenge exhaust gas recirculation system based on a composition of constituents within a total flow through the scavenge exhaust gas recirculation system. In one example, a method may include adjusting an engine operating parameter in response to individual flows of each of burnt gases, fresh air, and fuel to an intake passage, upstream of a compressor, from a scavenge manifold coupled to scavenge exhaust valves, the individual flows of each of the burnt gases, fresh air, and fuel determined based on a valve opening overlap between the scavenge exhaust valves and intake valves of the engine.

Methods and systems are provided for adjusting operation of a split exhaust engine system based on a total flow of gases through a scavenge exhaust gas recirculation system of the split exhaust engine system. In one example, a method may include setting a cam timing correction based on a difference between a first value and a second value of a flow through an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) passage, the first value determined based on a first parameter set including a cylinder valve overlap area and the second value determined based on a second parameter set not including the cylinder valve overlap area, and operating at least one of an intake cam and an exhaust cam at a corrected timing using the cam timing correction. In this way, the flow through the EGR passage may be adjusted even without active control of a valve coupled in the EGR passage.

Methods and systems for adjusting a flow of gases in a scavenge exhaust gas recirculation system of a split exhaust engine system

Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation to an intake passage via a first exhaust manifold and exhaust gas to an exhaust passage via a second exhaust manifold. In one example, each of a first valve positioned in an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) passage, the EGR passage coupled between the intake passage and the first exhaust manifold coupled to a first set of cylinder exhaust valves, and a second valve positioned in a flow passage coupled between the first exhaust manifold and the exhaust passage may be adjusted based on a measured pressure in the first exhaust manifold.

Systems and methods for a split exhaust engine system

In one example, a method may include adjusting engine operation in response to a flow of gases to an intake passage, upstream of a compressor, from a scavenge manifold coupled to scavenge exhaust valves, the flow of gases determined based on a valve opening overlap between the scavenge exhaust valves and intake valves of an engine, the scavenge exhaust valves opened at a different time than blowdown exhaust valves coupled to a blowdown manifold coupled to a turbine.

Methods and systems for estimating a flow of gases in a scavenge exhaust gas recirculation system of a split exhaust engine system

Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to an intake passage via a ported scavenge manifold. In one example, the ported scavenge manifold includes a first scavenge manifold coupled to a plurality of exhaust runners and a second scavenge manifold coupled to the plurality of exhaust runners via ports. The location of the ports on the exhaust runners combined with adjustments to a bypass valve coupled between the first scavenge manifold and an exhaust passage and an EGR valve coupled between the second scavenge manifold and the intake passage enables exhaust gas to be preferentially flowed to the exhaust passage and blowthrough air to be preferentially flowed to the intake passage under select operating conditions.

Methods and systems are provided for adjusting amount of directly injected fuel scavenged via a second exhaust manifold of a split exhaust engine system. In one example, a method may include adjusting a start of injection of a fuel direct injection into an engine cylinder, the cylinder including a first exhaust valve coupled to a first exhaust manifold and a second exhaust valve coupled to a second exhaust manifold, the second exhaust manifold coupled to an intake of the engine, based on a closing timing of the second exhaust valve and dependent on an operating condition, and adjusting a position of a bypass valve of the second exhaust manifold based on the adjusted start of injection. In this way, the amount of scavenged fuel may be increased or decreased based on the operating condition.

Methods and systems to control fuel scavenging in a split exhaust engine

Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation to an intake passage via a first exhaust manifold and exhaust gas to an exhaust passage via a second exhaust manifold. In one example, an intake valve timing, exhaust valve timing of a first set of exhaust valves coupled to the first exhaust manifold, and a position of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve in an EGR passage may be adjusted in coordination with one another in response to a condition at a compressor. The EGR passage may be coupled between the intake passage, upstream of the compressor, and the first exhaust manifold.

Methods and systems are provided for determining a dilution of recirculated gases, including blowthrough air, combusted exhaust gas, and fuel vapor, in a split exhaust engine. In one example, the dilution rate may be calculated using a steady state model based on temperature measurements from an intake region of the engine. The steady state model may be further used in combination with a feedforward model adapted to estimate engine dilution during engine transients as a correction factor.

Further, a position of a first valve positioned in a first passage coupled between the intake passage and the first exhaust manifold and/or a timing of the first set of exhaust valves may be diagnosed based on an output of a pressure sensor positioned in the first exhaust manifold.

Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation to an intake passage via a first exhaust manifold and exhaust gas to an exhaust passage via a second exhaust manifold. In one example, a flow of exhaust (e.g., exhaust gas recirculation) from engine cylinders to the intake passage, upstream of a compressor, via an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) passage and the first exhaust manifold may be adjusted by adjusting a timing of a first set of cylinder exhaust valves coupled to the first exhaust manifold. Additionally, the first set of cylinder exhaust valves open at a different time than a second set of cylinder exhaust valves coupled to the exhaust passage.

Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation to an intake passage via a first exhaust manifold and exhaust gas to an exhaust passage via a second exhaust manifold. In one example, in response to an electric motor driving an electric compressor positioned upstream of a turbocharger compressor disposed in the intake passage, a position of a valve in an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) passage coupled between the intake passage and the first exhaust manifold may be adjusted based on a pressure in the first exhaust manifold.

Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation to an intake passage via a second exhaust manifold and exhaust gas to an exhaust passage via a first exhaust manifold. In one example, in response to an intake throttle being at least partially closed, intake air may be routed from the intake passage to the second exhaust manifold via an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) passage where the intake air may be heated via an EGR cooler. The heated intake air may then be routed to an intake manifold, downstream of the intake throttle, via a flow passage coupled between the second exhaust manifold and the intake manifold.

Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation to an intake passage via a first exhaust manifold and exhaust gas to an exhaust passage via a second exhaust manifold. In one example, exhaust from a first set of exhaust valves coupled to the first exhaust manifold may be selectively routed to the intake passage via each of a first EGR passage coupled to the intake passage upstream of a compressor driven by a turbine and a second EGR passage coupled downstream of an outlet of the compressor. A decision of whether to route exhaust gas to the intake passage via the first EGR passage, second EGR passage, or both passages may be based on engine operating conditions.
