Method and system for registration of licensed modules in mobile devices. The present invention provides for a registration system to determine active use of licensed modules installed in mobile devices such as wireless cellular terminals and PDA's. The registration system can be made to operate in a manner that is substantially transparent to the user of the mobile device. In example embodiments, a module handler within the processor platform of the mobile device collects module parameters as necessary and causes registration messages to be assembled and sent. In some embodiments, encryption is provided. User interaction with the registration process can also optionally be accommodated. Additionally, the module handler can direct that use of the software module or package is restricted until an acknowledgement is returned from the module activation system, confirming the registration.

Method and system for registration of licensed modules in mobile devices

A method and apparatus are disclosed for aiding shoppers. A shopper enters a product search query into a hand-held device and, via Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology, transfers the query to a terminal at a shopping establishment. The terminal forwards the search query to a search engine over a network and the search engine, after consulting a database, returns results meeting the criteria of the search query to the terminal for presentation on a display at the terminal. The shopper is then offered the option of transferring the results data, via NFC devices located in the hand-held device and the terminal, from the terminal to a memory in the hand-held device.

Methods of securely communicating a message from a first terminal to a second terminal include generating a keypad including a random sequence of bits having a length L, encrypting the message at the first terminal using a bit string beginning at an offset O in the keypad, and transmitting the encrypted message and an indicator of the offset O to the second terminal. A communication terminal includes a controller, a communication module configured to establish a location-limited communication channel, and an encryption unit configured to store a keypad including a random sequence of bits having a length L, to encrypt an outgoing message using the keypad, and to decrypt an incoming message using the keypad.

Wireless hands-free system with silent user signaling. Silent alerting capability is provided for any hands-free device that relies on a short-range, wireless connection to interface to a terminal. The silent alerting action can be provided by any non-audible signaling mechanism, for example a vibrator or a light. A hands-free device establishes the short-range wireless connection with the communication terminal in question. When an alert message, such as for an incoming call, is received over the short-range wireless connection, the silent alerting action is produced in response to the alert message. The invention can find use in any wireless hands-free device, for example, a 'Bluetooth' headset.

A portable device authorizes a payment transaction from an account associated with the portable device. The portable device comprises a communication system, such as a near field communication (NFC) system, for communicating with a transaction system of a merchant or other receiving entity, a user interface, a memory storing account information for each of a plurality of accounts, and a transaction application. The transaction application applies at least one predetermined selection rule to the plurality of accounts to determine a selected subset of the plurality of accounts. A display of the user interface displays, under control of the transaction application, a plurality of transaction option indicators. Each transaction option indicator, which may be text or graphic, represents a one of the accounts within the selected subset of accounts. The transaction application prompts user selection of a selected one of the transaction option indicators. The transaction application drives the communication system to exchange data with the transaction system of a merchant or other receiving entity to initiate a payment to the merchant. The payment being from the payment account associated with the selected one of the transaction option indicators.

System and method for presenting multiple transaction options in a portable device

A method for providing information to a GPS receiver includes selecting an apparent location and receiving positioning information corresponding to the positions of a plurality of satellites. The positioning information is combined and transmitted as a radio frequency signal that can be received by a GPS receiver. When the GPS receiver demodulates the radio frequency signal and calculates its position, the calculated position will be approximately at the apparent location, regardless of where the GPS receiver is physically located.

Positioning system for portable electronic devices

A radio communication device modulates a received audio signal with an intermediate frequency (IF) signal before mixing with the radio frequency (RF) waveform for transmission by an antenna. A voltage controlled oscillator is utilized, which is tuned to N times the desired IF frequency. This voltage controlled oscillator is frequency modulated with the inputted audio signal to a deviation N times the desired IF source deviation. The voltage controlled oscillator is locked in a phase locked loop with a system reference frequency so that the output frequency is N times the desired IF frequency. The output of the voltage controlled oscillator is supplied to a 'divide-by-N' frequency prescaler for generating a signal at precisely the right IF frequency and deviation.

In accordance with the invention, there is disclosed a system for determining location of a mobile station. The mobile station includes a transceiver operating in a wireless network and a GPS receiver. The system includes a wireless network control system including GPS receivers for obtaining ephemeris data. The control system develops assistance information from the ephemeris data and transmits the assistance information to the mobile station via the wireless network. The assistance information represents range at a fixed location in the wireless network in proximity to the mobile station at a select time, and derivatives of the range, relative to plural select satellites in the GPS. The mobile station utilizes received assistance information for searching the composite received signals from the plural select satellites in the GPS to measure a code phase for plural ones of the select satellites in the GPS and returning the measured code phases to the wireless network control system via the wireless network. The wireless network control system computes location of the mobile station in the wireless network utilizing a fixed location and the measured code phases.

Method and system for aiding GPS receivers via a cellular or PCS network

Disclosed is an antenna mounted on a dielectric card with three pairs of dipoles. The dielectric card may be made of epoxy or epoxy glass or Teflon with glass fibers or any plastic with low dielectric loss and/or glass. Each dipole pair is designed to resonate at a different frequency band. Thus, for instance, a first pair provide signals in 800 MHZ range, a second dipole pair provide signals in the 1900 MHZ range and a third dipole pair provide signals in the 2400 MHZ range. With multiple dipoles the antenna can be used to provide wireless communications for several different frequency bands. The antenna card may hingeable or slideably mounted to a mobile computer. Thus, using a single antenna card a mobile computer can operate in several different frequency bands.
