In a preferred embodiment, a subscriber receives a challenge that is in a format of a local authentication protocol, and determines whether the local authentication protocol is the subseriber's home system authentication protocol. If it is not, the subscriber converts the challenge into a format (e.g., bit length) compatible with its home system authentication protocol, and processes the converted challenge with the subscriber's secret key and authentication algorithm into an authentication response. The authentication response is converted to be compatible with the local authentication protocol, and transmitted to a local system communication unit. The challenge and response is then forwarded to the subscriber's home system for similar conversion and processing, and subscriber's response is compared against a home system generated response.

A method of secure key distribution in a communication system having a plurality of subscriber units and an infrastructure communication center is provided. A first subscriber unit sends a request to the infrastructure communication center for a secure communication link with a second subscriber unit. This request includes an encrypted session encryption key which was encrypted with a first subscriber registration key. The infrastructure communication center decrypts the encrypted session encryption key with the first subscriber registration key. Subsequently, the infrastructure communication center re-encrypts the session encryption key with a second subscriber registration key. This re-encrypted session encryption key is sent to the second subscriber unit. In an alternative method, the first subscriber unit and the infrastructure communication center a priori know a session key. Therefore, the infrastructure communication center only needs to encrypt and send the session encryption key to the second subscriber unit, in response to a request by the first subscriber unit.

A method and apparatus for decoding of frequency inversion based scramblers is disclosed. A quadrature amplitude modulation detector determines the frequency of the tone used for inverting the scrambled signal by determining which of a plurality of quadrature detector pairs, each using a different conversion frequency, has the greatest magnitude difference between the quadraturely related signals. The frequency of the quadrature pair with the greatest difference is the frequency of the inverting tone during the inverting period of time. This frequency information is used to generate a reinversion tone to unscramble the scrambled signal.

A cryptographic apparatus for encrypting and decrypting digital words includes a mechanism that permits a cipher algorithm to be electronically stored after the manufacture of the apparatus. The storing mechanism includes at least one electrically erasable, programmable gate array containing a portion of the cipher algorithm and at least one random access memory device coupled to the array for storing digital data generated by the algorithm. A mechanism which is coupled to the gate array and memory device controls the execution of the algorithm for each digital word thereby decrypting encrypted digital words and encrypting non-encrypted digital words.

Cryptographic method and apparatus with electronically redefinable

A zener diode random number generator circuit is described which produces a random binary number output having a statistical distribution exhibiting a controlled degree of randomness determined in response to an input control signal. A microprocessor feedback circuit monitors the random number output and produces the input control signal in response to the difference between the degree of randomness of the output signal and that of a pre-determined statistical distribution. The digital feedback automatically adjusts the zener diode biasing point and the limiter threshold such that part-to-part tolerance, component aging, temperature variations, or voltage fluctuations will not adversely affect the randomness of the bit stream output. In the preferred embodiment, the microprocessor tests the ratio of ONES bits to ZERO bits of the random number such that a desired 1:1 ONES/ZERO ratio is approximated.

Random number generator with digital feedback

A television transmission system for asynchronously transmitting a television picture as a plurality of video samples over a narrow bandwidth medium from at least one remote transmitting site to a receiver at a base station. Improved synchronization between the transmitter and receiver are achieved by a dotting pattern consisting of alternating logic ones and zeros being sent by the transmitter to precede the video samples such that a sampling clock at the receiver synchronizes to the phase of the dotting pattern and thereafter samples the video signal. The video signals are also preceded by at least one predetermined digital word which identifies the particular remote transmitter and prepares the receiver to begin receiving the video samples. DC restoration circuitry determines the average value of the incoming video signals and to add an appropriate DC offset to the video signals to correct for any change in the gray scale of the video samples. A Barker word detector accurately points to the first video sample of the transmitted signal.
